Madison Brengle, Sam Querrey Enjoying Strong Start to Grass Season Kastles Teammates Reach Semifinals of Ricoh Open

Madison Brengle reached the third WTA semifinal of her career today, defeating Kateryna Kozlova 7-5, 6-4 at the Ricoh Open in Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. Madison overcame a tough draw and several hard-fought matches to reach the semifinal round. The first round saw her dismiss No. 5 seed and World No. 42 Laura Siegemund 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. This set up a match against local favorite Richel Hogenkamp in the second round. A two-and-a-half hour battle ended with Brengle grinding out a 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 victory. After two straight 3-set matches, Brengle had an easier time with Kozlova today, breaking the Ukrainian twice in the second set to close out the victory. Madison will meet fellow American and familiar foe Coco Vandeweghe in the semifinals tomorrow. Madison has won the last two meetings with Vandeweghe, each coming on a big stage. In 2015 the countrywomen met at the Australian Open with a birth in the fourth round on the line. Brengle rose to the occasion, handing Vandeweghe a 6-3, 6-2 loss that allowed her to advance to the fourth round, her best result ever in a major. Brengle replicated the result again this year, defeating Vandeweghe in the first round of the Australian Open 6-3, 6-4. The only meeting on grass between Brengle and Vandeweghe was in 2011 in Nottingham, with Vandeweghe prevailing 6-3, 6-3. As a Kastle, Brengle has even more history with Vandeweghe. In last year's Eastern Conference Final against the Philadelphia Freedoms, Brengle downed Vandeweghe 5-2 in a tough singles set. Brengle jumped on Vandeweghe early, grabbing a 3-0 lead and frustrating Vandeweghe by mixing up her shots. Brengle's victory gave the Kastles a 10-3 lead in route to thumping the Freedoms 25-9.

Along with Brengle, Kastles teammate Sam Querrey is also through to the semifinals of the Ricoh Open, having won six straight sets through the first two rounds. On Monday, Querrey took out German journeyman Benjamin Becker, grinding out two set-tiebreakers after both players faced no break points during either set. Querrey then easily dismissed his next two opponents, defeating Tatsuma Ito 6-3, 6-4 and young American Stefan Kozlov 6-3, 6-0.

Querrey faces a tough test in Frenchmen Nicolas Mahut in the semifinals tomorrow. Mahut, who is currently the No. 1 Men's Doubles player in the world, defeated the No. 2 seed Bernard Tomic 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. In their previous meeting in the first round of the 2015 US Open, Mahut upset Querrey in straight sets. This will be their first meeting on grass, a surface on which Mahut is very comfortable.

Both Sam and Madison's matches can be seen on Tennis Channel and the Tennis Channel Everywhere app. Madison is scheduled to go on court at 5 am EST, while Sam will go on around 11:30 am EST.

In their first grass tournament of the grass court season, the Bryan Brothers fell in the semifinals of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany to Oliver Marach (New York Empire) and Fabrice Martin (Philadelphia Freedoms) 6-7, 6-7. The French Open finalists started play in Stuttgart just four days after playing in the Roland Garros final. In the first round, the duo easily defeated Denis Istomin and llya Marchenko 6-3, 6-1. In the second round, the brothers took down hard-hitting Australian Sam Groth and his partner Robert Lindstedt 6-4, 7-6. Marach and Martin took revenge on the Bryans fortheir defeat at the French Open just a few weeks ago, beating the duo in two set-tiebreaks. Kastles fans can see Oliver Marach with the New York Empire on August 2 and can catch Fabrice Martin with the Philadelphia Freedoms on August 3. ~~~~~
