Gateway Grizzlies News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies dropped both games of a doubleheader at Rent One Park on Wednesday night, falling to the Southern Illinois Miners by scores of 8-2 and 6-2.

The Grizzlies (40-41) watched the Miners put together a seven-run fourth inning in Game 1 and Southern Illinois never looked back.

After the Miners took a 1-0 advantage against Gateway starter Adam Eggnatz (6-4) in the second inning, he ran into trouble again in the fourth. Four straight singles to start the frame and an error in left field made it 3-0, while Eggnatz exited the game for RHP Jon Pusateri.

With the bases loaded, Brandon Cummins hit a line drive into centerfield that was misplayed by Gateway's Brandon Thomas. The ball sailed over Thomas' head and rolled to the fence as Cummins raced around the bases for an inside-the-park grand slam. The Miners got another run in the inning to extend their lead to 8-0. Six of the runs were charged to Eggnatz.

Tyler Tewell hit a solo homer for Gateway in the fifth while Zach Lavy picked up an RBI single in the sixth. Southern Illinois RHP Jarrett Miller (8-3) allowed just those two runs through seven frames.

In the second game, the Miners (53-27) touched up RHP Will Landsheft for three runs in the first inning. Craig Massey drove in a run with a single while Alex De Leon and Riley Moore chipped in with a pair of run-scoring hits to put the Miners ahead 3-0.

The Grizzlies got on the board in the second inning with back-to-back doubles as Ben Waldrip and Jason Scholl laced a pair into the gaps. In the fifth, an error by Miners LHP Rich Mascheri led to a run scoring to make it 3-2.

RHP Evan Mott (3-1) pitched a scoreless sixth while Southern Illinois scored three runs against RHP Ja'Vaun West in the bottom half. One of the runs was unearned. RHP Jon Pusateri earned a scoreless frame in relief for Gateway.

RHP Adam Lopez closed out the game with a scoreless seventh and secured a 6-2 victory for the Miners.

The Grizzlies and Miners finish their series on Thursday night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Gateway sends RHP Vince Molesky (4-7, 3.45 ERA) to the mound against Miners RHP Brooks Trujillo (3-3, 4.27 ERA).

The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs Thursday on 1400 AM KJFF and online at www.GatewayGrizzlies.com/Radio. Sam Levitt has the play-by-play call.
