Griffins Elude Wild in OT with 3-2 Win

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Wild (18-19-3-1, 40 points) were defeated by the Grand Rapids Griffins (25-10-1-2, 53 points) 3-2 in overtime in front of 3,857 fans on Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Grand Rapids forward Martin Frk scored a power-play goal 1:34 into overtime, lifting the Griffins past Iowa. Forwards Tyler Bertuzzi and Ben Street also scored as the Griffins erased a 2-0 deficit with 8:55 remaining in the third. Iowa goalie Alex Stalock (12-10-3) stopped 37 of 40 as his three-game winning streak came to an end. Griffins' goalie Cal Heeter (6-1-0) stopped 23 of 25. Wild forward Sam Anas and defenseman Gustav Olofsson each had a goal in the defeat. Iowa continues a four-game home stand at 7 PM on Friday with Texas.

After two scoreless periods, Iowa opened the scoring at 1:34 of the third period. Defenseman Gustav Olofsson scored his fifth goal of the season to give Iowa a 1-0 lead. Forwards Alex Petan and Zack Mitchell each had an assist on the power-play goal. The Wild used its power play again at 8:26 to make it 2-0 lead after Sam Anas scored his sixth goal of the season. Olofsson and Mitchell each had the assists on the goal. The Griffins countered quickly at 8:55 of the third period with a rebound goal by Tyler Bertuzzi. Martin Frk and Brian Lashoff each had the helpers of the goal that made it 2-1 Wild. The Griffins tied the game 2-2 at 14:22 when Ben Street picked off a loose puck in the Iowa zone and snapped a shot past Stalock for his 13th goal of the year and a 2-2 tie.

The two teams went to overtime tied 2-2. The Griffins took advantage of an early power play, scoring just 1:34 into the third period. Defenseman Robbie Russo set up Martin Frk for a one-timer that beat Alex Stalock. Frk's 13th goal of the year made it 3-2 win for the Griffins.

Iowa welcomes the Texas Stars for a two games to close out the home stand, starting on Friday. Jan. 20 at 7 PM. The team celebrates Red, White and Blue Night for Military Appreciation, presented by Casey's and Billions Buick. The first 1,500 fans to the game will be handed a Kurtis Gabriel bobblehead, sponsored by Krist Insurance and Nash Icon. Plato's Closet is sponsoring a clothes drive that benefits Central Iowa Shelter and Services. Fans may also enjoy $2 beers, presented by 100.3 The Bus. Patrons may stick around after the game for a postgame skate. Fans may bring their own skates or rent skates for $2 to benefit the American Diabetes Association.

Iowa closes out the lengthy home stand with Country Night on Saturday, Jan. 21st at 7 PM. Parmalee headlines Country Night with a postgame concert, presented by Nash FM, Nash Icon, Catch Des Moines, Jim Beam Apple and Gregg Young Chevrolet of Norwalk. Fans may indulge in Jim Beam drink specials, including a $5 Beam Apple Orchard or a $10 Beam Apple Orchard in a mason jar. VIP Packages for the Parmalee show are available starting at $150. The Brewdog pack is also available, which features a beer/hot dog voucher at the game and a voucher for a free drink at Legends Bar and Grill.
