Griffin Finds Groove, But Riders Fall in Extras
June 19, 2016 - Texas League (TL1) - Frisco RoughRiders News Release
MIDLAND, TEXAS - A.J. Griffin pitched five innings and struck out seven batters, but the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, fell 5-4 in 12 innings to the Midland RockHounds in the series opener Sunday afternoon at Security Bank Ballpark.
Griffin, in his third Major League rehabilitation start with the RoughRiders (37-31), gave up just two runs, one earned, on three hits. He threw 77 pitches, 51 for strikes, and exited the game with Frisco leading 4-2.
After Griffin departed, the RockHounds (33-36) scored three unanswered runs against the Riders bullpen. A pair of RBI singles against Frank Lopez tied the game in the sixth, and Midland walked off with the victory in the 12th on Tyler Marincov's game-winning double off Jason Richman (0-1).
The RoughRiders gave Griffin four runs of support in the top of the fourth, after falling behind 2-0 early. Following a Preston Beck RBI single to get Frisco on the board, Joe Jackson put the Riders ahead 4-2 with a three-run homer to right field. It was Jackson's second home run of the season, and both of his long balls have come against Midland.
The RoughRiders continue their four-game road series Monday at 6:30 p.m. against the RockHounds. Southpaw Victor Payano (4-4, 3.64 ERA) is scheduled to start for Frisco against righty Corey Walter (1-2, 2.77 ERA). Fans can listen to the action on the Frisco RoughRiders Radio Network, the TuneIn Radio App, and the MiLB First Pitch App. Dr Pepper Pregame Show coverage begins at 5:55 p.m.
The Riders return home for a four-game series against Corpus Christi beginning Thursday, June 23 at 7:05 p.m. The homestand includes another Thursday Night Pool Party in the Choctaw Lazy River on Thursday and Salute to Top Gun Night on Friday, June 24.
