Grieving Frias Quiets Dash Bats

July 24, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Marcos Frias, pitching with a heavy heart, threw six terrific innings and Potomac shook off back-to-back walk-off losses to beat the Dash 7-2 on Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark. Frias' grandfather passed away earlier in the day, but the right-hander was able to stifle Winston's hot hitters and help the P-Nats earn their first win of the series.

The Dash (15-13, 58-40) scored first when Ozzie Lewis hit a solo home run off Frias in the bottom of the second inning to give Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead.

Potomac (15-12, 46-51) was the beneficiary of some fluky good fortune in the third to take the lead. Will Ortiz chopped a ball off Stephen Sauer's glove for an infield single. He reached third base on a sacrifice and a groundout. Steve Lombardozzi then hit what appeared to be a routine grounder toward the shortstop that would have ended the inning. However, the ball took a hard bounce off base umpire Tyler Wilson. Lombardozzi was awarded first base on umpire's interference and Ortiz remained at third.

Tyler Moore, who is currently on a Mantle-like tear, came to the plate and demolished a 1-0 offering more than 400 feet to left for a three-run home run. Moore's league-leading 17th homer gave the Nationals a 3-1 lead.

Winston-Salem got to within one run on a Jon Gilmore RBI single in the fifth inning, but left two men in scoring position when Seth Loman grounded out to first.

Things started getting away from Sauer in the top of the seventh. Ortiz and Chris Curran singled with one out before Josh Johnson reached on a 4-6 fielder's choice. A ten-pitch battle between Sauer (6-7) and Steve Lombardozzi ensued. With the count at 3-2, Sauer was called for a balk, scoring Ortiz from third and sending Johnson to second base. Lombardozzi walked on the next pitch and Sauer was lifted from the game. Jake Rasner struck out Moore to end the inning, but the P-Nats had taken a 4-2 lead.

Potomac scored three more times against Rasner in the eighth to blow the game open. Jose Lozada hit a two-run triple, and he scored on Ortiz' double.

Adrian Alaniz pitched three scoreless innings for his first save of the season and the second of his career. He saved it for Frias (4-4), who allowed two runs on five hits in six innings. A night after the Dash had 26 hits, Winston could only manage six against the combination of Frias and Alaniz.

The crowd of 6,625 at BB&T Ballpark was the fourth-largest of the season. The last two games have each drawn 6,000-plus fans.

The series concludes on Sunday afternoon when RHP Terry Doyle (5-5, 3.17) hopes to snap his personal two-game losing streak against RHP A.J. Morris (2-2, 3.67). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the audio pre-game show begins at 1:45 on www.wsdash.com.
