Grand Rapids Goaltender Jimmy Howard named AHL/Reebok Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League announced today that Grand Rapids Griffins goaltender Jimmy Howard has been named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 25, 2009. Howard stopped 67 of 69 shots in two appearances, going 2-0-0 with a 0.94 goals-against average and a .971 save percentage for the Griffins last week.
Howard made 24 saves on Wednesday night as Grand Rapids pulled out a 3-2 overtime victory over Toronto. Then on Saturday, Howard made a career-high 43 saves and stopped all five shootout attempts as the Griffins defeated Quad City, 1-0, for his third shutout of the season.
In recognition of his achievement, Howard will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Griffins home game.
In 26 games for the Griffins this season, Howard is 13-10-2 with a 2.40 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. The 24-year-old native of Syracuse, N.Y., was a second-round draft choice by Detroit in 2003, and has a record of 82-65-9 with 13 shutouts in 167 AHL games with Grand Rapids. He has also made eight career NHL appearances with the Red Wings.

Trevelyan, Lake Erie forward Philippe Dupuis, Lowell goaltender Jeff Frazee, Manitoba center Jason Krog, Peoria forward Steve Regier, Philadelphia forward Jonathan Matsumoto, Portland goaltender Jhonas Enroth, Quad City goaltender Matt Keetley, Rochester right wing Randall Gelech, Rockford center Petri Kontiola, San Antonio forward Wyatt Smith and Syracuse goaltender Dan LaCosta.
