Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Charlotte Stone Crabs defeated the Fort Myers Miracle, 4-2, at Hammond Stadium in the series opener on Friday evening.

The Stone Crabs put a dent in the scoreboard in the second inning against Miracle starter Keaton Steele. Cristian Toribio singled up the middle with one out and remained at first when Jace Conrad lined out. With two gone, Grant Kay jumped on a first pitch from Steele (0-2) to send a long home run to left field. The two-run shot put the Crabs up 2-0.

In the third, the Miracle drew even with a pair of runs. Brian Navarreto reached to start the frame with a pop up in front of the mound that was dropped by Toribio. Ryan Walker then laced a single into right center and Navarreto raced to third. Facing Danny Santana on an MLB rehab assignment, Stone Crabs starter Brent Honeywell threw a wild pitch that allowed Navarreto to score and Walker to move up to second. Honeywell (1-0) rallied to strike out Santana. Nick Gordon then delivered a single through the right side to plate Walker, 2-2.

Steele surrendered the lead in the fifth with a throwing error in the fifth. Conrad led off with a double into the left field corner. With Kay at the dish, Conrad took off from second. Steele whirled around and began a run down, but his throw to third base went over Chris Paul and rolled into the Miracle dugout. Conrad was awarded home plate to give the Crabs a 3-2 edge.

Charlotte added an insurance run against Steele with a two-out RBI double from Toribio.

Steele lasted a season-high six innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Honeywell went 6.2 innings for the Crabs and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with seven strikeouts. Kyle Bird earned the save by recording the final seven outs.

Luke Westphal pitched a scoreless inning in relief and Brian Gilbert tossed the last two frames without allowing a run.

Gordon finished the evening 3-for-4 with an RBI.
