Gordon, Aviles, Johnson, Humber Among Today's Moves

May 3, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) - Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA, NE - Alex Gordon has been optioned to the Omaha Royals and Mike Aviles has been recalled by the parent club. The moves were announced Sunday after Kansas City's 1-0 loss at Tampa Bay.

Gordon lost his hold on third base for Kansas City in favor of Alberto Callaspo, once second baseman Chris Getz was activated from the disabled list last Friday. Gordon missed the first ten games of Kansas City's season due to a broken right thumb. He had an eight-game rehab assignment in the Minor Leagues last month, including one contest with Omaha on April 16 at Albuquerque, when he went 3-for-4 with a solo homer.

The former Nebraska All-American was recalled by Kansas City the next day, due to Getz' strained right oblique. In 12 big league games, he batted .194 (6-for-31). His only home run and RBI came April 21 on a game-winning round-tripper at Toronto. Gordon has 72 hours to report to Omaha.

Aviles opened the season with Kansas City as a reserve, but was sent to Omaha on April 12 to get more playing time and continue to build up his arm strength following his elbow surgery last year. In 17 games with the O-Royals, he batted .271 with one home run and eight RBI. He was Kansas City's Player of the Year in 2008 as a rookie, when he hit 325 with ten homers and 51 RBI and in 102 games.

Aviles came out of Omaha's lineup Sunday at Iowa during a 55-minute rain delay during the eighth inning. Marc Maddox took his spot in the lineup and came through with an RBI single in his first at-bat in the ninth inning, lifting the Royals to a 5-4 victory and a four-game sweep of the Cubs.

In other moves today, 24-year old right-hander Blake Johnson has been promoted from Double-A Northwest Arkansas to Omaha and Philip Humber is being activated from the Triple-A club's disabled list. Johnson has made only two appearances for the Naturals this season, leaving his first start on April 12 after just 17 pitches due to a blister on his pitching hand. He returned from the DL and made a relief appearance on April 26. Originally the Los Angeles Dodgers' second round pick in the 2004 draft, this will be Johnson's first action at the Triple-A level.

Humber (1-2, 5.56) is slated to start tonight for the Royals at 6:35 p.m. when the Oklahoma City RedHawks visit Rosenblatt Stadium, opening a four-game series and eight-game homestand. Rotella's Italian Bakery presents $1 hot dog night - Hebrew National hot dogs are just $1.
