Gomez Retires After More Than Five Decades in Pro Baseball

November 29, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, Md. -Following 52 years in professional baseball and 12 as a member of the Orioles major league and minor league coaching staffs, Orlando Gomez is retiring. The Frederick Keys manager from 2010-12 and in 2015, Gomez posted the most wins in club history and is the only field leader to eclipse the 200-win plateau.

Following a 13-year playing career as a minor league catcher with the New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics systems, Gomez spent 39 years as a manager, coach and scout. More than 20 of those came as a minor league skipper, where he accumulated over 1,200 wins. That included 278 as the leader of the Keys.

With Frederick in 2011, Gomez guided the orange and black to a franchise-best 80-59 record and the top overall figure in the Carolina League. The year culminated with the Keys winning the Mills Cup Championship, while Gomez received the organization's Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development Award.

Among the members of the 2011 team were Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop, only two of many minor leaguers that Gomez helped tutor to the Major Leagues. This list also includes Kevin Gausman, Dylan Bundy, Donnie Hart and Trey Mancini. Prior to his time with Baltimore, Gomez helped develop Ivan Rodriguez, Ruben Sierra, Jason Varitek, Jay Bell and Wilson Alvarez, as well as current Red Sox manager, John Farrell among others.

Besides his work with the Orioles, Gomez spent time with Rangers, Mariners and Rays organizations. This included time on the major league staffs of all three as both a bullpen coach and first base coach.

A native of Juan Diaz, Puerto Rico, Gomez and his wife Nylsa have six children. His son-in-law Jose Hernandez is currently the field coach for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides.

The Frederick Keys open up their 2017 season on Thursday, April 6 at Nymeo Field against the Carolina Mudcats. To book your seats, fans can call 301-815-9900 or visit frederickkeys.com. Preparations for next season are underway, while a full promotional schedule will be released at a later date.
