Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
WINNIPEG, MB- The Winnipeg Goldeyes' compiled 25 hits to dispatch the Gary SouthShore RailCats 23-4 in front of 4,023 fans at Shaw Park.
It was a sour ending to a seven-game road trip where the RailCats had a chance to come out with a winning record with a victory today. Instead, the pitching staff gave season highs in runs, hits, and home runs.
Starting pitcher Blake Oliver, who signed with Gary SouthShore yesterday, surrendered 11 earned runs on 14 hits over four innings. Taylor Black struggled just as much in relief. The right-hander allowed nine runs on eight hits in just three innings. With the game out of reach, manager Greg Tagert elected to pitch first baseman Jeremy Hamilton in the 8th inning instead of use a reliever. Hamilton gave up three runs on three hits in his one frame.
The Goldeyes' 23 runs and 25 hits replaced the previous opponent season-highs of 18 runs and 20 hits recorded by the St. Paul Saints on May 21st. Winnipeg hit six home runs on the night, replacing the former record of four from the same game against St. Paul.
The RailCats' offense was as cold as the Goldeyes' was hot. The Cats scored three runs in the 2nd inning on base hits by Randy Santiesteban, Jarred Mederos and Cameron Newell. They only mustered two hits in the next five innings before Mederos hit an RBI double in the 8th to complete the RailCats' scoring for the afternoon.
The Goldeyes tallied 10 extra-base hits and all the home runs came by different hitters. Eight Winnipeg players had multi-hit days with Jacob Rogers and Carlton Tanabe registering four apiece. Conversely, six RailCats did not get a hit.
The RailCats, who won yesterday, have not had back-to-back wins since June 30-July 1. Today's game represented an opportunity to have a winning road trip, gain a game on the Goldeyes in the wild card race and head into an off day with momentum. Instead, the off day will be used to regroup before an important homestand against the wild card leading Laredo Lemurs and the division leading Lincoln Saltdogs.
The RailCats next game is Tuesday, July 19th at US Steel Yard at 7:10 PM. Coverage begins at 6:45 PM on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
