Godwin, Stormers Set Records In Win Over Ducks

Lancaster Stormers News Release

It was a record setting night for the Lancaster Barnstormers at Bethpage Ballpark.

The club banged out a club record 24 hits en route to a 16-5 drubbing of the Long Island Ducks on Saturday evening. Six of those hits belonged to center fielder Adam Godwin, also a club mark.

Lancaster is now 7-2 on its current road trip and has won 14 of its last 17 games overall to stay 4 1/2 games ahead of York in the second half Freedom Division race.

Long Island starter Adam Rowe (0-3) did not last the first inning. Gilberto Mejia and Godwin greeted him with base hits to get the night underway. Blake Gailen went down on a fly ball for the first out, but Fehlandt Lentini grounded a single to left with the runners in motion to score Mejia. Ryan Harvey crushed a double over the head of center fielder Reid Gorecki to score Godwin, but the ball ricocheted back to Gorecki quickly enough that he started a relay that cut down Lentini on a close play at the plate. Manager Butch Hobson was ejected for arguing the call.

The Barnstormers inning underwent only a slight detour. Travis Denker ripped a single to left center to score Harvey. He, in turn, crossed the plate as Kody Kirkland drilled a double into the left field corner. Emerson Frostad was hit by a pitch, spelling the end of the night for Rowe.

Josh Lansford was summoned to face Bridger Hunt, and the reedlike utility infielder launched his first homer of the season, and ninth of his career to left center for a 7-0 lead. Mejia and Godwin again both singled before Gailen again flied out to left to end the frame.

Godwin doubled home a run in the third, and the Barnstormers got to a season high 19 hits by the end of the fourth inning, scoring seven more in the process to take a 15-1 lead. Mejia, Godwin and Harvey each had an RBI single in the inning while Gailen knocked home two with a bases loaded hit up the middle.

John Halama (9-7) was not particularly sharp but did not need to be. The left-hander allowed five hits and three runs in six innings while walking five and striking out four. Four of the walks came along with a hit batter in the bottom of the third, but he allowed only one run in the inning thanks to a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Ray Navarrete.

Josh Johnson reached Halama for a two-run homer in the fourth, but, following a double by Dan Lyons, the veteran southpaw retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced in the game.

About the only suspense left was Godwin's night. He rapped out, his fifth hit, a single to left, off Connor Graham to open the sixth. The center fielder came to the plate again in the seventh with runners at first and second and one out. He hit a smash up the middle, but Lyons made a diving stop to get a force play on Hunt at second base. It was unclear whether or not Godwin would have another opportunity, but his chance was preserved by Kyle Haines' two-out pinch hit single in the ninth. Godwin, facing Jeremy Hill, hit a "Baltimore" chop over the mound and barely beat Lyons hurried throw to pick up the historic sixth hit.

The Barnstormers conclude the series and road trip on Sunday. J.D. Durbin (9-8) will make the start for Lancaster. Long Island has not named its starter for the game. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 4:45.
