Goats Tame Thunder to Keep Hopes Alive

TRENTON, NJ- The Hartford Yard Goats kept their playoff hopes alive Saturday afternoon, beating the Trenton Thunder 3-1. Led by winning pitcher Sam Howard (5-6), four Hartford pitchers combined to hold Trenton to one run. The Yard Goats improved to 70-54 and trail Trenton by six games (five in the loss column) with 17 to play.

Hartford took the lead in the second inning on four straight hits with two outs, culiminating with a two-run double down the left field line by rookie Cesar Galvez. Ashley Graeter's running-scoring double with two outs in the third made it 3-0.

Meanwhile, Howard flung six scoreless innings, as the southpaw won his fourth game in his last five starts. Matt Pierpont and Rayan Gonzalez each threw a scoreless inning, before lefty reliever Jerry Vastro - a New Jersey native pitching before family and friends - allowed Trenton's only run on two doubles, before getting consecutive ground outs to notch his eighth save.

Galvez had two hits and two RBI, while Rosell Herrera added two hits to pace the Hartford attack.

The rubber game of the series is Sunday afternoon at 1:00. LHP Carlos Hernandez (6-7)will pitch for Hartford. RHP Will Carter (0-3) takes the mound for Trenton. The game will be broadcast on NewsRadio 1410 WPOP and on the iHeart radio app.
