Albany River Rats News Release
Albany, NY- The River Rats netted three shootout goals in four rounds and goaltender Justin Peters turned-aside all three Monarchs attempts as Albany won a 3-2 shootout decision Friday night at the Times Union Center.
Jacob Micflikier connected on a deke to his forehand in the first round, Chris Terry stick-handled around Manchester goalie Jonathan Bernier in the third round and Drayson Bowman avoided a poke-check and sent a wrist-shot through Berneir's five-hole to seal the River Rats win in the fourth. Peters denied Monarchs snipers Juraj Mikus, Corey Elkins and Gabe Gauthier.
Albany clung to a 1-0 lead through two periods of action, but Manchester hit the board 43 seconds into the third, when Viatheslav Voyonov buried a long rebound from Richard Clune and Corey Elkins. Marc-Andre Cliche chipped-home a loose puck in the crease just 3:01 later to give the Monarchs their first lead of the game, but the River Rats evened the score with 4:06 remaining, when assistant captain Nicolas Blanchard tipped-home a Jamie McBain power play slap shot.
Albany struck first 1:36 into the game on a sharp-angle shot from Bowman. Bernier got a piece of the rookie forward's low attempt, but the heavy shot trickled just inside the far post for the only goal of the first two periods.
Peters stopped 38-of-40 shots faced to earn the win as Albany improved to 20-15-2-2 this season. Bernier turned-aside 33-of-35 for the loss as the Monarchs fell to 24-12-1-3 this year. Manchester out-shot the River Rats 40-36 and went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Albany was 1-for-4 on the man-advantage.
Albany continues its five game home-stand Saturday against the Hartford WolfPack at 7:00 p.m. River Rats 2009-10 pro-rated season and flexible ticket packages are now on sale at the River Rats executive offices at the Times Union Center, by calling (518) 487-2244 or by logging onto www.albanyriverrats.com.
