Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to upend the Rome Braves 3-1 in front of 2,999 fans Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. With the win, the first place Gnats improved to 13-4 at home in 2013.

Down 1-0 in the sixth, C Kevin Plawecki, the SAL's leading hitter drew a walk. A hit-by-pitch and then a single loaded the bases. Plawecki scored on a wild pitch by Braves' starter Rafael Briceno to even the game at 1-1. LF Gregory Pron followed with a walk which loaded the bases and chased Briceno from the game. Facing reliever Alex Wilson, making his Rome Braves debut, DH Jeff Glenn lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring 3B Cole Frenzel from third. The runner at second, Maikis De La Cruz tagged at second and went to third, Pron followed the play from first to second. Braves third baseman Carlos Franco's throw to second, in his attempt on Pron, sailed into right field allowing De La Cruz to score the Gnats' third run.

Maikis De La Cruz, who was added to the Gnats' roster today, was 2-for-4 in his Savannah debut.

The Braves scored the game's first run on a solo homerun by Casey Kalenkosky leading off the second inning off LHP Steven Matz.

Matz finished six innings for the first time this year, allowing one run on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk. The Gnats turned double plays behind him in the fifth and sixth innings to help him out of jams. He earned the win to improve to 2-0 with a 1.85 ERA.

The Gnats have won nine of their last 10 games at home.

The Gnats send RHP Rainy Lara (4-1, 1.45) to the mound on Friday against RHP Mauricio Cabrera (1-2, 3.16). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and gates to Historic Grayson Stadium open at 6 pm. The radio pregame show on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com begins at 6:45 pm.
