Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah ended its five-game losing streak with an exclamation point as the Gnats unloaded on the Rome Braves in a 11-7 win in front of 2,133 Thursday night. The Sand Gnats set a new season high for hits in a game with 17 while the 11 runs tied a season-high. Angel Calero (1-0) picked up the win in his Gnats debut while Sergio Valenzuela (1-3) took the loss.

It was all Savannah from the first inning when Hector Pellot led off the first with his seventh home run of the season to set the tone. Savannah scored four more runs in the inning. After a walk to Richard Pena, Darren Clark singled to put runners at first and second for the hot-hitting D.J. Wabick. Wabick delivered with a single to score Pena and Clark and make it 3-0. The Gnats tacked on two more with a Jonathan Santos double that made it 5-0 after one inning.

The Sand Gnats continued to pour it on in the second. Wabick recorded his second hit of the game with his seventh home run of the season. The four RBIs driven in by Wabick is an individual season-high for Wabick, and he continues to lead the team with 59 RBIs. He finished the game with a .301 average. He is hitting nearly .350 since the all-star break.

Calero lasted 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts. He won his last five games with the Kingsport Mets so he now has a personal six-game winning streak.

Helping Wabick lead the offensive attack was Jonathan Santos, who had 3 RBIs and went 2-for-4 with a double. Clark, Pellot, and Josh Thole all had three hits apiece to lead the team.

Rome made it interesting in the ninth inning. The Braves entered the ninth trailing 11-4, but reliever Ricky Sparks allowed a solo home run to Ernesto Mejia and a two-run home run to Phillip Britton to cut Savannah's lead to 11-7. Ryan Meyers entered and retired the only two men he faced to end the game.

Savannah will make its final road trip of the season as the team travels to Columbus for four games and Rome for three games before returning home on August 31. When the Gnats return to face Columbus on Friday, Aug. 31, it will be Silent Auction Night and College Football Night at Historic Grayson Stadium.
