Atlanta Gladiators News Release

Closing Time: The Gwinnett Gladiators wrapped up their 2010-11 season with three losses to the top team in the East, Greenville last week. A narrow 4-3 overtime defeat Thursday, coupled with a 4-1 loss Friday in the home finale and a 7-2 defeat Saturday put the Glads at 30-34-3-5 for the season.

Filangieri's Finale: In Gladiators defenseman Tim Filangieri's 67th game as a professional he picked up his first career goal (10/29/10 at Trenton). In the season finale Saturday in Greenville he registered his first career multi-goal game finding the back of the net for both of the Glads tallies on the night.

Saskatoon Sensation: Rookie forward Dustin Cameron emerged as a serious offensive threat for Gwinnett late in the season before missing the last three games with an injury. Over his last six games of the season Cameron scored six goals, and added four assists.

Fantastic Franny: Forward Matt Francis returned from a 38-game absence (IR) on 3/11 in Elmira and found the back of the net in the third period of a 2-1 loss. It was his first tally since October 22nd (he was put on the IR on 12/3). In the last twelve games of the season he recorded four goals and eight assists.

Forney on Fire: Forward Michael Forney went on a tear from the start of the New Year to the end of the season. Over those 36 games he had 40 points (16 goals and 24 assists) and had at least a point in 28 of those 36 games.

Magic Number: When scoring three or more goals this season the Glads were 25-8-3.

Killer Call-ups: Called-up players missed 277 games for the Glads this season (3rd highest total since the team moved to Gwinnett), and there were 23 call-ups total (16 by Chicago). The 23 call-ups falls five short of last season's record total, although six of that record number were short stints in the AHL by goaltender Danny Taylor.

A Full 60 Minutes: Gwinnett was a perfect 22-0-0 this season when leading after two periods of play but were just 2-29-6 when trailing after two periods of play this season. The only other team that went undefeated when leading after two periods was Brabham Cup-winning Alaska (38-0-0). The only team with more losses when trailing after two was Victoria (1-31-0).

Missing the Dream: Forward Akim Aliu was reassigned to Peoria (AHL) from Atlanta (NHL) on March 7th. Aliu had 20 points (12 goals) in 16 games with Gwinnett and the Glads were on a six-game winning streak at the time of his call-up. In the 12 games after they went just 2-9-1 and averaged only 2.2 goals per game.

Bucking the Trend: In three game sets this season Gwinnett typically improved the more they saw an opponent. That wasn't the case the last three weekends of the season, however, as the Glads dropped the second and third games against Florida, Reading, and Greenville. In the first game the Gladiators were 4-4-4, and they went 7-4-0 in the second and third games (14-8-0 combined).

League Leading Glads:

Michael Forney Finished the regular season ranked 9th in the ECHL in assists (45) and 13th in points (69). His 22 powerplay assists were 4th best in the league. His five first goals put him in a tie for 15th.

Pat Galivan Ranked 15th in the league in assists (39) and 8th in powerplay assists (19). Danick Paquette His 179 penalty minutes ranked 7th.

Akim Aliu Despite playing in only 16 games, his nine powerplay goals ranked 17th and his five game-winners put him in a tie for 7th.

Andy Brandt Finished tied for 3rd with five unassisted goals, and his three shootout goals were tied for 6th.

Between the Pipes:

Chris Carrozzi Finished 4th and led rookie goalies in games played with 47 and minutes with 2,544. Was tied for 15th with 16 wins, and his two shutouts were tied for 13th.

History in the Making:

11/23/10 Chris Carrozzi registered the first home shutout for the Glads since Dan Turple blanked Columbia on Oct. 28, 2006.

70 Shots on goal for Gwinnett on 10/29/10 at Trenton was not only a Glads record, but an ECHL record as well. Gwinnett won 3-2 in a SO.

1 The Glads allowed just one shot in a period two times this season (10/22 v. SC, 1/29 @ KAL). They hadn't allowed that few since 1/14/08 @ Mississippi.
