The Gwinnett Gladiators claimed the South Division title for the second consecutive year with a 4-1 win over the Greenville Road Warriors last Saturday. The Gladiators finished the season with a 43-26-2-1 record and 89 points on the year good for 3rd overall in the ECHL's Eastern Conference. The Gladiators begin the 2013 Kelly Cup Playoffs this weekend on Friday and Saturday night against the South Carolina Stingrays at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

South Carolina Preview: South Carolina is ranked at third in the South Division and sixth in the Eastern Conference with 84 points and a regular season record of 38-26-5-3. The Stingrays last regular season home game was a 3-1 win over Greenville on March 29th. Gwinnett posted a 2-1 win over the Stingrays on March 23 in the last meeting between the teams as Gwinnett finished the regular season with an 8-6-0-0 record against South Carolina this year. Goaltender Ryan Zapolski was named on the ECHL All Rookie team and the First Team and leads the Stingrays with a 1.64 GAA and a 0.942 save percentage.

Saturday, March 30: Gwinnett 4, Greenville 1 -W

The Gwinnett Gladiators notched a 4-1 win over the Greenville Road Warriors on Saturday night to capture their second consecutive South Division Championship. Justin Bowers scored the first goal of the game for Gwinnett 4:27 into the first period with assists from Cody Brookwell and Sacha Guimond. Rookie Tristin Llewellyn followed with a tally late in the first at the 14:11 mark to add to the Gladiators lead over Greenville. Brendan Connolly got Greenville within one 7:08 into the second period with Greenville's lone tally of the game. Gladiators forward Joey Haddad scored 14:19 into the third period to give Gwinnett a 3-1 lead as Brandt and Guimond assisted on the tally. Less than a minute later Casey Pierro-Zabotel capped the scoring with his 22nd goal of the season to give Gwinnett a 4-1 lead.

News & Notes:

Playoff Time! The Gladiators officially clinched the South Division title with their 4-1 win over the Greenville Road Warriors. With the win they finished in third place in the Eastern Conference and will face the South Carolina Stingrays in the first round of the playoffs. Gwinnett will have the home ice advantage and will host Games 1 & 2 of the series and if necessary, Games 6 & 7.

NO Penalties! In Gwinnett's last game of the regular season against the Road Warriors they set a team season record with no penalties against throughout the game. Gwinnett had given at least one power play opportunity in each game this season until Saturday's 4-1 win over the Road Warriors.

Between the Pipes: Rookie netminder Louis Domingue has won seven of his eight starts this month and has posted a 1.88 goals against average and a .935 save percentage. With his stellar play in March, Domingue has pushed his GAA down to 2.69 and has earned a 0.904 save percentage this season. The Mont. St-Hilaire, PQ native earned his third shut out March 9th against the Idaho Steelheads. In his last two games he only gave up one goal in each outing to help lead the Gladiators to victory.

Champions Again! The Gwinnett Gladiators have won the South Division for the second consecutive year in a row. Last season the team finished with 95 points and a 41-20-7-4 record before heading to the playoffs. This is the first time in Gladiators team history where the team has captured back-to-back division titles. Last season, the Gladiators were knocked out the Kelly Cup Playoffs in the first round against the South Carolina Stingrays.

ECHL ALL-Teams: Rookie Sacha Guimond was named to the ECHL All-Rookie team last week with 49 points (12 goals, 37 assists) in 58 games this season. Of those points 24 were scored in the 25 games with Gwinnett. Guimond was also named on the ECHL First Team with forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel who leads the Gladiators in scoring with 75 points (22 goals, 53 assists) in 66 games on the season. Pierro-Zabotel is ranked fifth in the ECHL top scorers.
