Atlanta Gladiators News Release


The Gwinnett Gladiators had their four-game winning streak snapped on Sunday with a 3-2 loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones. It was still a successful week, however, as Gwinnett picked up six points with a 3-1-0-0 record. The Gladiators have reclaimed first place in the South Division with a season record of 31-19-2-1 and the second overall spot in the Eastern Conference.

Wednesday, February 6: Gwinnett 3, Trenton 2 - W

"ªThe Gladiators scored the first goal of the game 15:20 into the first period in their 3-2 victory over the Trenton Titans at the Sun National Bank Center. The marker came from Scott Arnold with assists from Andy Brandt and Casey Pierro-Zabotel. Forward Jacob Cepis put the Titans on the board with a goal 2:12 into the second to tie the score 1-1. Gladiator's defenseman Cody Brookwell picked up his third goal of the season 7:53 into the second to put Gwinnett back on top of Trenton. Jason Clark picked up an assist and Arnold picked up his second point of the game. Joey Haddad added to margin of victory with a goal 12:37 into the third period. Alex Belzile and Sacha Guimond picked up helpers on the play. Mike Ullrich scored the last goal for the Titans 12:44 into the third to cap the scoring.

Thursday, February 7: Gwinnett 3, Wheeling 2 - W

The Gladiators topped the Nailers 3-2 in a shootout at WesBanco Arena. Casey Pierro-Zabotel put Gwinnett on the board with the first goal of the game 3:03 into the first period. The Nailers answered with a pair of goals early in the third period. The first unassisted tally came at the 3:37 mark from forward Peter Lenes. Less than two minutes later rookie Jordy Trottier scored the second goal to put Wheeling ahead of the Gladiators 2-1. Gwinnett forward Justin Bowers tied the score 12:44 into the third with assists from Alex Belzile and Joey Haddad to send the game into overtime. Although neither team scored in overtime, Pierro-Zabotel, Belzile and Haddad each scored in the shootout to win the game for Gwinnett. All three are former Nailers.

Saturday, February 9: Gwinnett 6, Evansville 5 - W

Gwinnett collected a third victory for the week against the Evansville Icemen at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. The Gladiators scored two goals in the first period. Rookie Nick Walsh picked up his first goal of the season 8:11 into the first period followed by a marker from Justin Weller 14:37 into the first. Evansville scored a pair of markers in the second for a 2-2 tie before Scott Arnold answered with a goal 8:49 into the second to put the Gladiators back on top of Evansville. The Gladiators scored the next three goals to make the score 5-2. The first goal by Joey Haddad came at the 10:11 mark of the second. Yuri Bouharevich scored his first goal of the season 11:02 into the third period, followed by another marker from Haddad 12 seconds later. Evansville scored three unanswered goals in the last five minutes of the game to end the score 6-5 for the Gladiator victory.

Sunday, February 10: Cincinnati 3, Gwinnett 2 - L

The Cincinnati Cyclones ended the Gladiators winning streak in a 3-2 loss at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Gwinnett earned a 2-0 lead through the first two periods of the game. The first goal for the Gladiators came 10:59 into the first period from defenseman Jon Awe. Awe picked up the power play marker with an assist from Ryan Donald. Rookie Doug Jones picked up his eighteenth goal of the season 13:06 into the second to end the second period with a 2-0 score. Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Andy Brandt picked up a helper on the tally. Cincinnati scored three unanswered goals in the third period to top off their win. The first goal came 9:31 into the third from Dan Eves. Cylcone's defenseman Josh McFadden picked up an unassisted goal 12:25 into the first followed by a marker from Trevor Lewis 71 seconds later.

News & Notes:

Close Calls: The Gladiators last four games have been decided by one goal, with Gwinnett winning three of them.

Back on Top: With their 3-1 week the Gladiators reclaimed the top spot in the South Division, leapfrogging Greenville. Coming into the week Gwinnett (31-19-2-1 - 65 points) has a two point edge over the Warriors (29-17-2-3 - 63 points). The Gladiators have, however, played two more games than the Road Warriors.

Back in Action: Doug Jones, Sacha Guimond, and Mike Lee have all been returned to the Gwinnett Gladiators after being called up last week to the AHL. Jones was called to the San Antonio Rampage and skated in two games. Guimond played with the Norfolk Admirals in one game before being returned. Netminder Mike Lee played in his third AHL win with the Portland Pirates.

Five in a Row: Forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel collected one assist in the 3-2 loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones. The assists helped the forward pick up his sixth point of the week and added to his five-game point scoring streak. Evan Bloodoff currently holds the season record with seven consecutive games with a point.

Streakers: Forward Joey Haddad has six goals in his past ten games ... Forward Andy Brandt has an assist in three of his past four games ... Goaltender Louis Domingue has allowed three goals or less in four straight starts (2-2) ... Forward Doug Jones has at least a point in 11 of his last 13 games in Gwinnett (6 G, 10 A).

Scoring First: Gwinnett's 3-2 regulation loss to Cincinnati on Sunday was just the second time this season the Gladiators fell when scoring the first goal (27-2-1-1).
