Atlanta Gladiators News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Doug Jones scored his 22nd goal of the season, but that's all the Gladiators could muster Friday night at North Charleston Coliseum in a 5-1 loss to the South Carolina Stingrays.

The loss snaps Gwinnett's five-game winning streak, but the Gladiators (41-26-2-1) remain in first in the ECHL's South Division.

Former Gladiator goaltender Ryan Zapolski turned aside 37 of 38 shots for South Carolina (36-25-5-3), while Mike Lee took the loss in his first start with the Gladiators since February 9th.

South Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead through one period despite being outshot 16-7, with Patrick Gaul (5:20) and Scooter Vaughn (8:03) tallying the goals.

The Rays kept their roll going into the second. Damon Kipp scored off a Gwinnett turnover just 29 seconds in, and Chris Langkow pushed the South Carolina lead to 4-0 only 58 seconds later. Peter Boyd then made it 5-0 at 5:19 with his 20th goal of the season.

Marietta native Doug Jones capped the scoring in the second with a terrific effort, stealing the puck shorthanded and beating Stingrays goalie Ryan Zapolski on a breakaway at 11:48 for his 22nd goal. Justin Weller added an assist, and the Gladiators trailed 5-1 through 40 minutes.

Despite outshooting the Rays in the third, the Gladiators could not further cut into the four-goal deficit and fell by a 5-1 final.

Both of these teams will clash again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
