Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Alex Belzile scored twice and Cody Carlson finished with two points to help lead the Gwinnett Gladiators (25-12-1-0) to their third straight win with a 4-2 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings (15-18-2-1) on Saturday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Both of Belzile's markers came in the first period for Gwinnett. His first came just 3:54 into the opening period as he redirected Doug Jones' centering feed past Wings netminder Joel Martin for the goal.
Kalamazoo tied the game at 13:15 of the opening period as Brian Bicek dribbled the puck past Gwinnett netminder Mike Lee to tie the game at one. John Kivisto and Alexandre Grenier notched the assists on the goal.
Belzile regained the lead for Gwinnett with his 5th goal of the season at 4:52 of the first period. Belzile ripped a shot from the right wing circle past Martin for the goal. Doug Jones and Andy Brandt had the helpers on the marker.
Cody Carlson extended the Gladiators lead to 3-1 as he slipped a rebound past Martin midway through the second period with his second goal of the season. Carlson stepped out of the penalty box and took an outlet pass from Jason Weller to set up the marker.
In his first game back in the lineup with Gwinnett since November 7th, Joey Haddad notched his second goal of the season to give Gwinnett a 4-1 lead. Haddad's marker came on the power play at 11:54 of the second period with Carlson and Casey Pierro-Zabotel collecting the assist on the goal.
Kalamazoo cut the lead in half midway through the third period on the power play on Jeff Pierce's first goal of the season. Pierce jammed the puck past Lee for the marker at 11:07 of the third but it was too little too late for Kalamazoo. Mallett had an assist on the goal.
Gwinnett went 1-for-3 on the power play while Kalamazoo posted one goal on the power play on nine chances. Lee finished with 27 saves in the win for the Gladiators as Martin notched 19 in the loss.
Gwinnett Hosts Kalamazoo on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
