San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - Four High Desert pitchers combined on a five-hitter and the final 11 San Jose batters of the game were retired in a 3-1 Mavericks victory over the Giants on Wednesday evening at Municipal Stadium. High Desert and San Jose (59-57) have now split the first two games of their series.

Jonah Arenado (1-for-4) and Daniel Carbonell (1-for-3) each extended their hitting streaks to seven games in the loss. No Giants player finished the game with more than one hit.

The Mavericks won despite going 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position and leaving 12 on base. High Desert knocked out 15 hits in the contest.

The game was scoreless through three innings before the Mavericks broke through against San Jose starter Jose Reyes in the top of the fourth. Back-to-back singles from Luke Tendler and Jose Trevino started the frame to put runners on first and second. Reyes though induced the next batter, Jose Cardona, to ground into a double play with Trevino forced out at second. However, Juremi Profar followed with a single to plate Tendler with the first run of the night. Jairo Beras then kept the rally going with a single of his own before Josh Morgan delivered an RBI single - the fifth hit of the inning - to make the score 2-0.

The Giants immediately cut the High Desert lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth. A one-out walk to Mitch Delfino and a two-out walk to Carbonell set the stage for Ty Ross, who produced an RBI single to bring San Jose to within 2-1. Mavericks pitcher Adam Quintana though limited the damage in the inning when the retired the next batter, Robbie Garvey, on a groundout to leave the potential tying run at third.

High Desert then got the run back in the top of the fifth. Scott Heineman led off with a double before Dylan Moore drew a walk. Tendler then flied out to deep right with Heineman advancing to third. Reyes retired Trevino on a pop out to shortstop, but with Cardona at the plate, the Mavericks successfully executed a double steal with Moore swiping second and Heineman stealing home to make it 3-1.

San Jose then managed just two baserunners over the final five innings. Dylan Davis singled with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but was stranded when Jonah Arenado struck out looking. In the sixth, Miguel Gomez singled with one out to bring the tying run to the plate, but Carbonell and Ross both struck out to end the inning. The Giants were then set down 1-2-3 in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings by the High Desert bullpen.

Quintana (6-4), who entered the game to begin the top of the third, earned the win. The right-hander pitched four innings of long relief and allowed one run and three hits. He walked three and struck out four. Clayton Cook tossed two perfect innings over the seventh and eighth notching four strikeouts. Nick Gardewine then struck out two in a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning for his fifth save of the year.

The trio of Quintana, Cook and Gardewine combine to record 10 strikeouts over the final five innings.

Reyes (3-4) suffered the loss for San Jose after yielding three runs (all earned) on nine hits over five innings. He walked one and did not record a strikeout.

Notes - * San Jose fell to 2-4 on their homestand. * High Desert snapped a two-game skid with Wednesday's victory. The Mavericks (69-46) haven't lost more than two in a row since a four-game slide from July 5-8. * Carlos Diaz (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO), Austin Fleet (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) and Pat Young (1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief for the Giants. * Catcher Rene Melendez was transferred to Augusta (A) before the game. Infielder Richard Rodriguez was activated off the disabled list.
