San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - Sam Coonrod and two relievers combined on a three-hit shutout Monday afternoon as the Giants earned a 3-0 win over the Modesto Nuts at Municipal Stadium. With the victory, San Jose (30-19) took three out of four games in the home-and-home series from the Nuts.

Coonrod (5-1) allowed just two hits with three walks and a season-high seven strikeouts during his masterful outing. Coonrod, who won his fifth consecutive start, lowered his season ERA to a league-best 1.18. Pat Young (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) and Rodolfo Martinez (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) then completed the shutout out of the Giants bullpen.

Chris Shaw (1-for-4, HR, RBI) hit his 11th home run of the season to lead San Jose at the plate. Steven Duggar (2-for-4), C.J Hinojosa (2-for-4), Daniel Carbonell (2-for-4) and Jose Vizcaino, Jr. (2-for-4) added two singles apiece.

The Giants took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first against Modesto starter Ryan Castellani. Duggar started the inning with a single. After Brandon Bednar popped out on a bunt attempt, Hinojosa grounded out advancing Duggar to second. Shaw was up next and his sharp grounder to first was misplayed by Josh Fuentes for an error. The miscue allowed Duggar to score from second with the first run of the contest.

Coonrod had to escape trouble in the top of the second to maintain the one-run lead. Collin Ferguson led off with a double to deep left before Fuentes was hit by a pitch. The San Jose starter though recovered striking out Max White before inducing Troy Stein to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Coonrod needed only seven pitches to work a 1-2-3 top of the third before pitching around a one-out double from Shane Hoelscher in the fourth. With the score still 1-0, the Nuts threatened in the fifth against Coonrod. White drew a leadoff walk before moving to second on Stein's groundout. White then stole third, but Modesto was unable to bring him home as Forrest Wall grounded out and Emerson Jimenez struck out swinging.

The Nuts once more put the tying run at third base in the top of the sixth, but again failed to score. With one out, Wes Rogers reached on a two-base throwing error committed by Vizcaino at third. A groundout from Hoelscher moved Rogers to third, but Coonrod then struck out Ferguson on three pitches to end the inning.

The Giants added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth against Castellani. Vizcaino began the rally with a one-out single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Ty Ross' groundout moved Vizcaino to third before another wild pitch scored the run to make it 2-0.

Coonrod issued a one-out walk and a two-out walk in the top of the seventh, but with runners on first and second, Young entered from the bullpen and quickly got out of the inning when Jimenez grounded out. Young then breezed through a 10-pitch 1-2-3 top of the eighth.

Shaw extended the lead to 3-0 when he led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run down the right field line.

In the ninth, Martinez surrendered a two-out triple to White, but came back to retire Stein on a groundout to end the game. Martinez's save was his league-leading 15th of the season.

Castellani (1-5) suffered the loss for Modesto after yielding two runs (one earned) and seven hits over seven innings. He struck out five and walked none.
