San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Giants matched a season-high with 18 hits in an 8-1 victory over the Inland Empire 66ers on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. Miguel Gomez and Jonah Arenado each homered while four other San Jose players collected three hits in the contest. The Giants (51-48) have now won two out of the first three games in the series against the Sixers.

Ty Ross (3-for-4, 2 2B), Ronnie Jebavy (3-for-5, 2 RBI), T.J. Bennett (3-for-3, RBI) and Robbie Garvey (3-for-5) had three hits apiece to lead a balanced San Jose offensive attack on Saturday. Gomez (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBI) added two hits, including a key three-run home run. Arenado (1-for-4, HR, RBI) also smacked his 11th home run of the season.

Jose Reyes (3-3) earned the win after achieving season-high totals of 6 2/3 innings and seven strikeouts while allowing just one run. The right-hander surrendered three hits and did not issue a walk during his 99-pitch performance.

Inland Empire scored first in the game plating one run in the top of the third against Reyes to take a 1-0 lead. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Michael Hermosillo was hit by a pitch. David Fletcher then stepped to the plate and blasted a triple off the fence in deep left center scoring Hermosillo with the first run of the night. Reyes though prevented further damage when he struck out the next hitter, Hutton Moyer, to end the inning.

The Giants then immediately answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Consecutive singles from Bennett and Ross started the frame. After Richard Rodriguez popped up a bunt for the first out, Jebavy grounded an RBI single up the middle to tie the game. Then with two outs, Dylan Davis singled into center plating Ross for a 2-1 San Jose advantage.

Reyes struck out two in a scoreless top of the fourth pitching around a two-out single to keep the Giants ahead. He then fanned two more Sixers hitters in a perfect fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Davis started a run-scoring rally with a two-out double to deep left. After Arenado drew a walk, Gomez crushed a fly ball over the fence in right for a three-run homer. The home run, Gomez's first in the California League, pushed the San Jose lead to 5-1. The rally then continued as Daniel Carbonell singled before stealing second base. Bennett followed with an RBI single through the hole on the left side to make it 6-1.

Reyes breezed through a 1-2-3 top of the sixth before the Giants kept the pressure on with another run in the bottom of the inning. Ross led off with a double to deep right center, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Jebavy's one-out single into shallow left.

Reyes began the top of the seventh with a strikeout of Jared Foster - the eighth straight Inland Empire batter retired by the San Jose starter. Roberto Baldoquin then singled before a two-out single from Webster Rivas knocked Reyes out of the game. D.J. Snelten though entered from the bullpen and promptly retired Josh Delph on a groundout to end the inning.

Arenado capped the scoring for the night with a towering solo home run to left leading off the the bottom of the seventh. The round-tripper extended the Giants lead to 8-1.

Snelten (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) and Pat Young (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) threw perfect eighth and ninth innings respectively for San Jose to seal the victory.

66ers starting pitcher Justin Anderson (4-10) suffered the loss after yielding seven runs (all earned) on 14 hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out four.
