Generals Fall to Bulldogs in Overtime

The Oshawa Generals battled the Hamilton Bulldogs tonight at the Tribute Communities Centre to close off their weekend at home. The Gens came into the game with a 3-4-0-0 record, coming off a tough loss to the Petes in a close 2-1 game on Friday. With the Bulldogs in town, the Gens looked to down their division foes and grab two points before heading on the road to take on the Petes on Thursday.

1stPeriod:

The Gens opened the game with a huge offensive chance that saw Nando Eggenberger put a shot off the post. Only seconds later, the Bulldogs brought play into the Oshawa end and got one past the Gens, giving them an early 1-0 lead. Shortly after, Hamilton came down the ice on a two-on-one chance, but Generals goaltender Kyle Kyser came up with a massive stop, stretching across the crease to deny the opportunity. Just under five minutes into the game, the Bulldogs took a too many men penalty to go down a man, but the Gens were unsuccessful on the powerplay attempt. Back at even strength, Arthur Kaliyev of the Bulldogs was able to get another goal for Hamilton and increase their lead to 2-0. With just under five minutes left in the period, the Bulldogs got called for a slashing penalty to give Oshawa the man advantage. The Gens weren't able to capitalize on the powerplay chance and would finish the first period trailing 2-0.

2ndPeriod:

Four minutes into the second period, the Gens headed to the box on a cross checking call. With several saves from Kyle Keyser, the Gens were able to kill off the penalty and remain within two of the Bulldogs. Just before the halfway point in the period, the Bulldogs had a wraparound opportunity that was initially stopped by Keyser but put into the net on the second chance. Moments later, the Gens broke out down the ice and a Serron Noel pass sprung Nando Eggenberger on a breakaway. Making no mistake on the chance, Eggenberger put the puck just inside the post to put the Gens on the board. After the goal, the Gens received a penalty to put the Bulldogs on a powerplay that they were able to score on, giving them a 4-1 lead. Hamilton added to their lead again with a shorthanded goal with just over five minutes remaining in the second. Right after the goal against, the Gens put up a tally of their own on a beautiful shot by Nick Wong for his second goal of the season. The Gens didn't stop there, adding to their total with a blast from the point by Nico Gross, giving him his first goal of the season. Oshawa would head into the third period down 5-3.

3rdPeriod:

The Gens received an early third period powerplay after the Bulldogs took a slashing penalty. While they didn't score on the man advantage, Nando Eggenberger scored his second goal of the game just after the Bulldogs penalty expired, putting the Gens within one of tying the game. Gaining momentum off the goal, Oshawa was buzzing and generating some good looks on net as the period approached the halfway mark. Eight minutes into the period, the Gens got called on a four-minute penalty for high sticking. A great effort on the penalty kill by the Gens caused the Bulldogs to take a holding penalty to put the play at 4-on-4. With both teams down a man, Kyle MacLean passed the puck to Mitchell Brewer who was open in the slot to rip home the fourth straight goal for the Gens to tie the game at 5-5. The game remained tied for the rest of the third, sending the match to overtime.

Overtime:

The Gens controlled the flow early, getting an amazing chance on net that was stopped by the Bulldogs goalie. The opportunities continued for the Gens, with a breakaway chance that was once again stopped. After the action in the Bulldogs end, Hamilton came down and was able to capitalize on their chance to score, ending the game at 6-5 for the visiting team.

After a close comeback effort, the Gens will look to rebound from tonight's loss when they take on the Peterborough Petes on the road on Thursday. The team will then continue on the road to play the London Knights on Friday before returning home to take on the Petes at the Tribute Communities Centre on Sunday.
