Generals Drop Opener in Chattanooga

Chattanooga, Tenn. - The Generals managed to get to Gabriel Moya Friday night, but one run in the ninth inning was it for Jackson in a 3-1 loss to the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field in the series opener. Michael Perez took his former teammate deep in the final frame to avoid a shutout, but Moya held on to finish off Jackson.

Down 3-0 in the ninth inning, the Generals faced Gabriel Moya for the first time since he was traded from Arizona to Minnesota. The lefty had not allowed an earned run since May 1- in a game against Chattanooga- coming into the night. With one out in the frame, Michael Perez launched a 2-2 pitch over the fence in right field to get Jackson on the board. The last home run Moya allowed was April 18.

Moya (S, 19) responded by retiring the next two men in order. He struck out Victor Reyes on three pitches before getting Kelly Dugan to fly out. Despite allowing the homer, Moya picked up his second save with Chattanooga and his 19th overall. He has not blown a save opportunity all year long.

Jackson (20-21, 57-54) was held in check by Chattanooga's league-leading staff. Stephen Gonsalves (8-3, 2.68) worked into the seventh inning without allowing a run. The Generals only had multiple men on base once Friday night. Marty Herum, who went 2-for-4, was the only Jackson player with multiple hits.

Chattanooga (31-20, 73-38) did enough on offense to secure the victory. The Lookouts took the lead early with a pair of solo home runs against Ryan Atkinson (1-1, 2.45). T.J. White led off the second inning with his 11th home run of the year on a fly ball that just snuck out over the left field fence down the line. Nick Gordon added a home run in the third inning.

Atkinson allowed just two runs on three hits in 5.2 innings, though he did walk six. The righty struck out five, giving him 145 total across three levels this season. Joey Krehbiel finished the sixth and worked the seventh without allowing a run, but Chattanooga added an insurance tally on a sacrifice fly in the eighth on Josh Taylor.

The loss on Friday drops Jackson to 3.5 behind Montgomery in the Wild Card standings. The Biscuits were rained out and will play a doubleheader against Mobile Saturday. With Tennessee's win over Pensacola, the Generals are a half-game back of the Smokies as well.

Game two in Chattanooga is Saturday night, with Ivan Pineyro (8-0, 3.06) getting the start for Jackson against righty Kohl Stewart (5-5, 3.86). First pitch from AT&T Field is scheduled for 7:15 pm ET/6:15 pm CT, and fans can listen to all the action starting with the Pregame Show at 7:00 pm ET/6:00 pm CT on Willie 94 FM & 1390 AM.
