Gameday: Adirondack vs. Manchester

April 16, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Adirondack Thunder News Release

TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Tonight's matchup is Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals between the Manchester Monarchs and the Adirondack Thunder. The Thunder lead the best of seven series 2-0, extended with a 4-3 overtime win for the Thunder last night in Manchester. The Thunder and Monarchs are familiar foes, after the two teams faced off 15 times during the regular season.

WORKING OVERTIME: The Thunder came away victorious in their first overtime playoff game in franchise history. Adirondack captain Peter MacArthur scored 9:40 into the extra session to give his team the victory and the 2-0 series lead with both wins coming away from home. The goal, which gave MacArthur a two-point night, marked the second playoff game winner of his ECHL career, the first that came in overtime.

STEPPENWOLFE: Thunder forward Greg Wolfe had himself another fine offensive night, collecting two points in yesterday's win. Wolfe assisted on Michael Kirkpatrick's first period goal and provided a third-period equalizer, knotting the score at three with just 5:49 to play in regulation. Wolfe now leads all ECHL scorers in postseason play with 5 points (3-2-5).

CAPTAIN KIRK: Dating back to the regular season, Thunder forward Michael Kirkpatrick has collected multiple points in five straight games, extended with a two-point effort in last night's win. Kirkpatrick scored Adirondack's first goal for the second straight night and added a helper on Wolfe's game-tying goal late in the third period. Kirkpatrick ranks second on the team to Wolfe with four playoff points (2-2-4), after he led the Thunder in scoring during the regular season with 60 points (29-31-60).

HEARD IS THE WORD: The Thunder also got a multi-point effort from forward Mitchell Heard, who collected a first period goal to go along with the primary assist on MacArthur's game winner in overtime. Heard, who was near a point-per-game pace during the regular season in Adirondack (32 points in 33 games) scored for the first time since he was sent back to the Thunder from the AHL's Stockton Heat. Heard now has 11 points (4-7-11) in 12 career ECHL playoff games.

BACK WHERE WE BELONG: Tonight's game marks the first time since 2006 that an Adirondack team will play in the postseason at the Civic Center, with the UHL's Adirondack Frostbite the last to see playoff action. The Thunder will now look to become the first Adirondack team since 1994 to win a playoff series and the first since 1992 to win a championship, dating back to the Adirondack Red Wings days.

A LOOK AHEAD: Following tonight's Game 3, the series remains in Glens Falls for game 4, beginning Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. If necessary, the series would shift back to Manchester for Game 5 on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
