Gameday: Adirondack at South Carolina

April 29, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Adirondack Thunder News Release

TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Tonight's matchup is Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals between the South Carolina Stingrays and the Adirondack Thunder. The two teams square off for the fourth time this season, with Adirondack holding the 2-1 series advantage from the regular season. Each team is entering tonight's action off of a 4-1 series victory in their respective Eastern Conference Quarterfinals Series.

THE NUMBER 22: With their win in Round 1 over the Manchester Monarchs, the Thunder became the first Adirondack team since 1994 to win a playoff series, dating back 22 years to the Adirondack Red Wings days. The Red Wings defeated the Springfield Indians in six games in their American Hockey League Northern Division Semi-Final series in the 1994 Calder Cup Playoffs.

SEVEN UP: The Thunder are led by a trio of forwards at the top of the scoring charts, all of whom collected seven points in five Round 1 games. Greg Wolfe (4-3-7) tops the charts in goals, combining with Mitchell Heard (3-4-7) and Peter MacArthur (2-5-7) to lead the Adirondack offense. Each player also contributed a three-point effort in Round 1, with Wolfe (2-1-3) leading the way in Game 1 and Heard (2-1-3) and MacArthur (0-3-3) contributing in Game 3.

GIVE IT A REST: Both teams have had an extended break leading into tonight's Game 1, courtesy of their respective five-game series victories. The Thunder had eight days off in between games, two days more than their longest stretch during the regular season, when they had six days in between games four separate times. South Carolina last played on Saturday at home, giving them five days in between Round 1 and Round 2.

CATCHING SOME RAYS: The Thunder were led by forward Michael Kirkpatrick (3-0-3) and defenseman Mathieu Brodeur (1-2-3) against South Carolina during the regular season, with both players at a point-per-game in the three head-to-head matchups. Kirkpatrick's three tallies led all scorers on both sides, while Stingray forward Stephan Vigier led all players with three assists.

ADIRONDACK ALUMNI: South Carolina forwards Trevor Gillies and Brett Cameron both skated in Glens Falls a season ago with the Adirondack Flames of the AHL. Gillies appeared in 20 games and collected one goal, while Cameron joined the team late in the season out of college and picked up an assist in five games played.

A LOOK AHEAD: Following tonight's Game 1, the series will remain in South Carolina for Game 2 tomorrow evening. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum. After the weekend, the series shifts to Upstate New York beginning with Game 3 on Tuesday evening at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
