'Game-Tying' Goal Comes Seconds Too Late
March 2, 2013 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - In a sport where inches usually mean the difference between winning and losing, it was precious seconds on Saturday night that cost the Colorado Mammoth (2-6). Captain Gavin Prout scored the game-tying goal at the end of regulation, but it came two seconds too late.
"That's just the type of year it's been," said Prout, who scored the 300th goal of his career earlier in the night. "Right now, we've got to battle through those unfortunate incidents and hopefully we get some bounces our way the next few games."
The clock was friendly to the Rochester Knighthawks (4-5) in their 12-11 victory on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center, as forward Cory Vitarelli scored with 0.4 seconds remaining in the first quarter, and less than two ticks left to end the third.
Colorado netminder Dan Lewis was solid in his first career NLL start, recording 28 saves, including several that kept his team in contention.
"[Dan] gave us opportunities to win this game, and he made saves that he shouldn't have been making," said forward Jamie Lincoln, who scored a goal in the first quarter. "At the end, it's the W's and the L's that matter. We need W's."
Second-year forward Jordan McBride scored three goals and one assist, and 2012 NLL MVP John Grant Jr. had a seven-point night (2g, 5a) against his former team.
Ultimately, forward Cody Jamieson's tally 7:49 into the final frame, his fourth of the night, proved to be the game-winner.
Colorado dropped to 1-4 at home this season, and is in the midst of a four-game losing streak. The Mammoth takes on the Rock in Toronto on Friday, March 8 at 5:30pm MST. The following night, the team is in Buffalo for a match-up with the Bandits.
