Game Recaps: SeaWolves Walk off in Doubleheader Split

It took extra innings in game two of Sunday's doubleheader, but the SeaWolves came out on the winning end of a 5-4 game at UPMC Park.

The SeaWolves struck first in the bottom of the third against Trenton spot starter Nester Cortes. Logan Watkins and Jeff McVaney started the inning with back-to-back singles. With two outs, Christin Stewart belted a three-run home run to right, giving Erie a 3-0 lead. It was the seventh home run of the season for Stewart.

Trenton cut into the Erie lead in the top of the fourth inning against spot starter A.J. Achter . Achter had retired the first nine hitters he faced before giving up back-to-back doubles to start the inning. Miguel Andujar doubled home the baserunners to make it 3-2. Victor Alcantara came in and shut down the Thunder threat.

The Thunder then tied the game in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Mike Ford reached on an error. Erie lifted Alcantara in favor of Ruben Alaniz . Alaniz gave up an RBI triple to Zack Zehner to plate the tying run. He would strike out Dante Bichette, Jr. to end the inning.

The game then went to extras and the Thunder took the lead in the top of the eighth. Cave led off with a double. Torres singled putting runners on first and second for Andujar . Andujar grounded to A.J. Simcox at short who threw out Cave advancing to third. Erie then intentionally walked Ford to set up a force at every base. Alaniz was lifted for Kurt Spomer who faced Zack Zehner . Zehner sent a dribbler down the third base line and brought home Torres on the groundout for a 4-3 lead.

The SeaWolves would tie the game in the last of the eighth against Thunder reliever Cale Coshow . It was once again Stewart who came up with a solo home run to right with one out. The home run was his eighth and it was his second multi-home run game of the season. Six of Stewart's eight home runs have come against Trenton.

Erie would get out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the ninth and sent the game to the bottom half tied. Miguel Gonzalez led off with a single but was erased at second after failed Gabriel Quintana sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Jeff McVaney kept the inning alive with his third single of the game. Simcox then won the game for Erie, lacing an RBI single to right, scoring Quintana.

The win was Erie's third walk-off win of the season and it snapped their three-game losing streak in extra innings games.

Spomer (1-1) earned the win tossing 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with a walk and two strikeouts.

Coshow (0-2) took the loss allowing two runs in relief.

Trenton took the first game of Sunday afternoon's doubleheader over the SeaWolves 6-0 at UPMC Park.

The Thunder grabbed the lead off of SeaWolves starter Myles Jaye in the top of the second when Jake Cave connected on a one-out, solo home run for a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third Thairo Estrada led off with a single and moved to second on an error. With two outs, Mike Ford doubled home Estrada for a 2-0 lead. Miguel Andujar followed with an RBI double, plating Ford to make it 3-0.

Jaye came out to work the fourth but would not make it through the inning. He walked Jorge Saez to start the inning and gave up a double to Devyn Bolasky, plating a run for a 4-0 Trenton lead. The SeaWolves summoned Jairo Labourt to make his Double-A debut in relief of Jaye . With one out, Billy McKinney lifted a sacrifice fly to center, plating Bolasky to make it 5-0.

The Thunder added a final run off of Labourt in the fifth. Ford led off with a double and scored on an Andujar base hit for a 6-0 advantage.

The SeaWolves mustered just four hits in the game, all singles.

Trenton starter Ronald Herrera (2-0) earned his second straight win over Erie tossing six shutout innings, allowing four this with no walks and four strikeouts.

Jaye (0-3) took the loss allowing five runs on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout in three innings of work.
