Game Recap: Seven in Second Lead Thunder Win over Bowie

June 10, 2017 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release

A seven-run second inning for the Thunder and five strong innings from Nestor Cortes pushed the home team to a 7-3 victory over the Bowie Baysox in front of 7,496 fans at ARM & HAMMER Park on Saturday night.

The Thunder improved their Eastern League-leading record to 39-21 and will go for a sweep of the Baysox on Sunday afternoon at 1pm.

Working against Matthew Grimes, the Thunder offense broke the game open in the second inning. Rashad Crawford led off with a single and Billy Fleming drove him in with a double into left-center. Jorge Saez followed him with another double and Abiatal Avelino drove him in with a single. Thairo Estrada kept the line moving with a single of his own and after a strikeout, Miguel Andujar crushed a three-run home run over the wall in left-center field. It was his seventh home run of the season.

With a 6-0 lead the Thunder offense kept rolling with a walk from Mike Ford and after a pitching change, Zack Zehner doubled to left to put runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly from Crawford finished the scoring for the Thunder offense.

The seven-run inning matched the most runs scored in an inning by the Thunder this year, set on May 1 against the Harrisburg Senators. This inning, however, was a career-night for Trenton's Bat Dog, Derby. Working throughout the bottom of the second, the eight-year-old golden retriever retrieved the bat of ten of the 11 batters in the inning (did not retrieve McKinney's bat after his strikeout). The seven runs scored in an inning in which Derby was retrieving bats was a career-high, surpassing six runs in an inning on four previous occasions.

Bowie got a run back in the third on a solo home run by Chris O'Brien and a pair of runs in eighth on a double from Adam Brett Walker. Dillon McNamara finished the game with one strikeout in a scoreless ninth.

Nestor Cortes earned his fourth win of the season with five innings of one-run ball. Cortes allowed four hits, no walks and struck out four.

Every Thunder batter reached base in the game with Jorge Saez pacing the offense with a three-hit game. Miguel Andujar drove in three runs to take the Eastern League lead with 46 RBI on the season. Crawford and Avelino each added two hits in the game.

Your Thunder continue go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon at 1pm against the Baysox. LHP Josh Rogers (2-0, 4.00) will start for the Thunder, RHP Brandon Barker (3-1, 4.04) will go for Bowie. The first 1,000 fans, ages 5-15, will receive Thunder Drawstring Bag Giveaway, presented by St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center.
