Prince Albert Raiders News Release

Brandon, MB - The Prince Albert Raiders (3-4-2-0) led late, but couldn't hold on as the Brandon Wheat Kings (7-2-0-1) downed the Raiders 6-5 in overtime at Westman Place.

Schael Higson walked in from the blue line and beat Raiders goaltender Curtis Meger to end the game 1:32 into the extra frame.

Cole Fonstad was the offensive catalyst for the Raiders. The 17-year-old had two goals and an assist in the loss.

The Raiders jumped out to an early lead on the afternoon. Sean Montgomery roofed a backhand over Wheat Kings goaltender Dylan Myskiw 50 seconds into the game.

The lead held until midway through the period. Tanner Kaspick capitalized on a Wheat Kings' power-play opportunity to tie it up at 1-1. Approximately five minutes later, Kale Clague scored another power-play goal, squeaking a shot past a diving Curtis Meger to give Brandon a 2-1 lead.

Less than two minutes later, the Raiders drew level again. Fonstad potted a Jordy Stallard rebound off the rush to make it a 2-2 game after 20 minutes.

Montgomery restored the Raiders' lead 49 seconds into the second period. Vojtech Budik's pass left him alone in the slot and the Calgary product made no mistake.

In the third, Curtis Miske put the Raiders up two with a power-play goal at the 3:25 mark, burying a feed in the slot from Fonstad. Less than 20 seconds later, Ben McCartney beat Meger to make it a one-goal game again at 4-3.

Midway through the period, Fonstad took a stretch pass from Zack Hayes and solved Myskiw for the second time on the afternoon to put the Raiders ahead 5-3. However, the Wheat Kings got back within one less than two minutes later on Gunnar Wegleitner's six of the season. About three minutes later, Ty Lewis scored a power-play goal to tie the game at 5-5.

In the overtime period, the Raiders never gained possession of the puck after Brandon won the opening faceoff. Higson led a line change and beat Meger off the rush to end the game.

Meger made 24 saves in a losing effort for the Raiders. Myskiw stopped 20 shots to earn the win for the Wheat Kings.

The Raiders are back in Prince Albert on Tuesday night when the Vancouver Giants visit the Art Hauser Centre.
