Game Recap: Late Barrage from K-Wings Not Enough in Manchester

December 3, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

MANCHESTER, NH- Ben Wilson had his first career multi-point game in the ECHL, but the Kalamazoo Wings came up short in a 4-2 loss to the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday night inside SNHU Arena.

Late in the first period, and with Anthony Camara in the penalty box for slashing, the Monarchs' power play- which ranks third in the ECHL- went to work and propelled Manchester to the game's first lead. Quentin Shore slid the puck to the blue line and engaged a give-and-go with Teddy Doherty, who wired the puck back to Shore for a tap in at the back door.

Early in the second period, the Monarchs added to their lead after another sound passing play freed up space in the Kalamazoo zone. Derek Arnold was on the receiving end of a feed by Shore that left Arnold alone for a one-timer that sailed past Kalamazoo goalie Nick Riopel.

Less than two minutes later and killing a penalty, Kalamazoo clawed back to within a goal on the backs of their second shorthanded tally in as many nights. Lane Scheidl got the puck from Wilson, and carried into the Monarchs zone, snapping a glove-side wrist shot that leaked into the net, closing the gap to 2-1.

During that very same power play try, Manchester responded with their third goal of the night and second on the man advantage. Another tic-tac-toe passing play opened up room for Arnold, who cashed in with his second goal of the evening and moved the Monarchs' power play to a perfect 2/2 through that point.

Later in the period, Manchester were rewarded for sustained pressure in the Kalamazoo zone and registered their fourth goal of the night. A long slap shot from Doherty flew through traffic and was tipped by the stick of Rihards Bukarts, causing it to change directions and bounce into the net, extending the lead to 4-1 after two periods.

Late in the third period, Kalamazoo's third line yielded results as tireless pressure from Scott Henegar earned the second goal of the night for the Wings. Cycling along the left-wing boards, Henegar carried towards the goal and knocked the puck off Monarchs' goaltender Sam Brittain and over the line, placing the Wings to within two.

Pulling Riopel in favor of an extra attacker late in the game, Kalamazoo generated a flurry of chances but were held at bay, as Manchester defended their way to a 4-2 victory.
