Colorado Upends Allen to Grab 2-0 Series Advantage
ALLEN, TX. - Eagles forward Alex Belzile netted a pair of goals, while Colorado goaltender Lukas Hafner denied 29 of Allen's 31 shots on goal, as the Eagles defeated the Americans 5-2 on Saturday. The victory was Colorado's sixth straight in the postseason and now gives the Eagles a 2-0 series lead, as the teams will shift to Colorado for Game Three on Wednesday at the Budweiser Events Center.
For the second straight game in the series, Colorado would open the scoring when forward Johnny Lazo fired a shot from between the circles that would beat Allen goaltender Riley Gill and give the Eagles the 1-0 lead just 4:46 into the contest. The Americans would outshoot the Colorado 13-6 in the first period, but some stellar play from Hafner would allow Colorado to head to the first intermission with a 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles would stretch their lead midway through the second period, as Belzile created a turnover inside the Allen blueline and carted the puck through the slot before snapping a wrister past Gill to give Colorado the 2-0 edge at the 9:54 mark of the middle frame.
Later in the second period and with the Eagles on the power play, defenseman Matt Register would slice through the right circle and lace a puck through the leg pads of Gill to extend the Colorado lead to 3-0 with 5:33 remaining in the period.
With the Eagles taking a three-goal lead into the third period, Allen would stage a rally in the third period that would start with forward Gary Steffes burying a wrist shot from the slot to cut the Eagles lead to 3-1 just 2:23 into the final frame.
Later in the third period, forward Josh Brittain barged his way on top of the crease and slammed a puck into the back of the net to pull the Americans within one goal with 3:42 left in regulation.
The Eagles would quickly find an answer, as a two-on-one rush down the ice set up Belzile to light the lamp with a backhander at the 18:01 mark of the third period to up Colorado's advantage to 4-2. The lead would be bumped to 5-2 when forward Ryan Harrison nabbed an empty-netter with 55 seconds left in regulation to seal the victory for Colorado.
Colorado finished the night going 1-for-4 on the power play, while shutting down all four of Allen's opportunities on the man-advantage.
The Eagles return home to face the Allen Americans in Game Three of the ECHL Western Conference Semifinals on Wednesday, May 3rd at 7:05pm MT at the Budweiser Events Center.
Tickets for all second round games are on sale now and start at just $20 each. Tickets can be purchased at the Budweiser Events Center box office, online at ColoradoEagles.com or by calling the Eagles ticket office at (970) 686-SHOT (7468).
