Game Notes: Houston Dynamo Vs. San Jose Earthquakes

April 19, 2017 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Houston Dynamo FC News Release

HOUSTON- The Houston Dynamo will make their national television debut on Saturday afternoon when they host the San Jose Earthquakes at 3pm CDT at BBVA Compass Stadium. For the Dynamo, it's also a matchup against their former selves, as the club came into existence when Major League Soccer and Anschutz Entertainment Group relocated the Earthquakes to Houston after the 2005 season.

Houston comes into the game looking to snap a two-game winless skid, coming off of a loss at New England on April 8 and a disappointing 2-2 home draw with Minnesota last Saturday night. San Jose is on a four-game winless run of their own, with two losses and a pair of draws in their last four games after opening the season 2-0-0.

Saturday night, the Dynamo appeared on track to cruise to a fourth consecutive home win after racing out to a 2-0 halftime lead behind goals from forwards Mauro Manotas and Alberth Elis. But a 15-minute spell to start the second half saw Minnesota draw level, and although the Dynamo pressed for the game-winner over the final 30 minutes, they were unable to find the final ball needed to snatch the win.

San Jose stunned FC Dallas with a 1-1 draw at Avaya Stadium on Friday night. The result itself wasn't stunning as much as the way in which San Jose earned the draw. Dallas broke a scoreless deadlock in the 78th minute and seemed poised to capture a valuable road victory, before Quakes midfielder Jahmir Hyka leveled the score on literally the last kick of the game in the 94th minute.

Houston will look to keep its high-scoring ways going at home, where the club is averaging 2.75 goals per game this year. The challenge for the Dynamo will be to break down an Earthquakes defense that has only conceded eight goals on the year. The other quandary that the Dynamo will look to solve this week is their ongoing second-half woes. Houston has a league-best plus-eight goal differential (10-2) in the first half of games, but their minus-six differential (3-9) in the second half is the worst in MLS.

Saturday is also Kids Day presented by Mustang CAT at BBVA Compass Stadium as the Dynamo host their first matinee home game of the season. There will be kids-focused activities in and around the stadium throughout the day, including a Kid PA Announcer, Kid Sideline Reporters, and a children's choir from Yeager Elementary performing the National Anthem. Dynamo Diesel, the Dynamo mascot, will celebrate his birthday (albeit a few days late) with his mascot friends from around town, and there will also be face painters and balloon artists stationed outside the stadium and around the concourse.
