Game Notes: Broncos Battle Brandon

The Records: The Broncos are 24-36-6-3. They are 14-20-1-1 at home and 10-16-5-2 on the road. Swift Current is 6th in the East Division and tied for 10th in the conference.

The Broncos are mathematically unable to catch Edmonton for the final playoff wildcard spot. Swift Current will miss the playoffs for only the 4th time in the team's 30 seasons.

Brandon is 45-18-4-2. That record clinches first place in the East division and gives Brandon a four point lead over Lethbridge in the conference. Brandon has won their last six games outscoring the opposition 46-10 over those six games. A Brandon win tonight clinches the eastern conference pennant.

VS Brandon: The Broncos are 2-5-0-0 vs Brandon while Brandon is 5-1-0-1 vs Swift Current. Brandon's Macoy Erkamps leads the season series in scoring with 7 points (1g, 6a) while Swift Current's Jon Martin has 6 points (1g, 5a) vs The Wheat Kings.

On the Road Again: Swift Current has played all of their 36 home games. With the 2016 Ford World Women's Curling Championships coming to Swift Current, the Broncos needed to vacate the Credit Union i-Plex. The Broncos handed out their end-of-season awards with Jon Martin winning 7 including team MVP. Other award winners included Max Lajoie winning top defenceman, Tyler Steenbergen winning most sportsmanlike and Artyom Minulin winning rookie of the year.

The Sheriff signs on the dotted line: Swift Current Bronco captain Jon Martin signed a two-way entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks at the beginning of Marh. Martin is in his final season of major junior eligibility and was undrafted. The 20 year old Winnipeg native has 41 goals this season. Martin had a career total of 32 goals coming into this year.

SICK BAY: Jordan Harris, upper body indefinite. Cole Johnson, upper body indefinite.

Special Teams: The Bronco power play is scoring 19.1% of the time, which is 15th best in the WHL. The penalty kill is 20th in the league at 75%

Brandon's power play has the second best percentage in the league at 23.9%. The Wheat King PK operates at 81.1% which is 6th best in the WHL.

Who to Watch: Swift Current'sJon Martin has 41 goals this season.

Swift Current's Tyler Steenbergen had 15 points in 13 games in February including 11 goals. Steenbergen has 16 points in his last 16 games.

Since being acquired by Swift Current, Lane Pederson has 35 points in 34 games.

Brandon's Ivan Provorov has 6 goals and 9 points in his last 4 games.

Brandon's Jayce Hawryluk has 13 goals and 20 points in his last six games.

Brandon's Nolan Patrick has 18 points in his last 6 games.

300 club: The Broncos have 2 players who have surpassed 300 WHL games this season. Jon Martin played his 300th in Saskatoon February 17th in Saskatoon while Jamal Watson played his 300th January 15th in Swift Current vs Calgary.

Central Scouting with an Eye on Max: Max Lajoie was just ranked 41st among North American skaters in the midterm rankings by NHL Central Scouting.

Bronco Prospect and All-Star: 2015 Bronco first round bantam pick Riley Stotts was named a second team all star in the Manitoba Midget AAA hockey league. Stotts was the only 2000 born player named to a league all-star team. The 15 year old forward leads The Winnipeg Wild in scoring with 18 goals, 17 assists and 35 points in 27 games.

Heward appeared at World U17's: Broncos assistant coach Jamie Heward served as an assistant coach of Team Canada Red at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Heward and Team Canada Red lost to Sweden in the Bronze Medal game Saturday.

Bronco Prospect wins gold at Mac's: 1999 born forward and Bronco prospect Tyler Oakenfold was part of the gold winning team at the Mac's Midget Tournament in Calgary. Oakenfold plays for the Calgary Midget AAA Flames.

Broncos Prospects Shine in U16 Challenge Cup: 3 members of the Broncos Bantam Draft class of 2015 took part in the U16 Challenge Cup in Calgary. Josh Prokop and Jacob Bernard-Docker were a part of Gold Medal winning Team Alberta. 2000 born prospect Riley Stotts led silver medal winners Team Manitoba in scoring. Broncos Assistant General Manager Jamie Porter and Goaltending Coach Derek Purfield also lent their talents to Team Alberta.

Drafted Broncos: Glenn Gawdin was selected in the 4th round by the St. Louis Blues in 2015. Gustav Olhaver as a 7th round selection of the Colorado Avalanche.

The Roster: The Broncos have 25 players on their roster.

Imports are Gustav Olhaver from Sweden and Artyom Minulin from Russia.
