Game Notes, August 1 vs. San Antonio

August 1, 2012 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

San Antonio (20-18, 48-60) at Corpus Christi (26-12, 63-45)

Last night, the Hooks let a five-run lead in the seventh go by the wayside but Jon Singleton's eighth-inning home run gave it right back as Corpus Christi continued its march toward a second-half crown with an 8-7 victory over San Antonio. Marc Krauss hit a two-run home run to right field in his first at-bat with the Hooks for a 2-0 advantage in the opening frame. Cody Decker responded in the top of the second with a lead-off home run to left. Drew Locke helped put the Hooks up 7-2 on a two-run double in the sixth. San Antonio would tie the score on Jeudy Valdez's two-run shot in the seventh off Arcenio Leon and Jason Haggerty's three-run poke in the eighth off Josh Zeid. Undeterred, Singleton opened the home half by launching a 3-2 pitch into the CC bullpen for his first home run since July 13.

Matt Heidenreich fashioned another solid start for the Hooks, allowing two runs on four hits in five innings. He fanned four and did not walk a batter. Kevin Chapman slammed the door with a perfect ninth for his second save.

Corpus Christi has won nine of its last 12 games and leads the Missions by six in the TL South second-half race.

Tonight's Matchup:

RHP Eddie Kunz (2-3, 5.10) vs. RHP Paul Clemens (0-0, 5.40)

Kunz, acquired from the New York Mets in exchange for INF Allan Dykstra last March, makes his 15th appearance and fifth start for the Missions tonight. The RoughRiders rocked him for eight runs on nine hits in four innings last Friday at Dr Pepper Ballpark, handing Kunz his second consecutive loss. He was limited to 3.2 innings on June 22 against the RockHounds, allowing one unearned run on four hits and three walks. In Kunz's first two starts, - May 28 vs. Arkansas & the finale of a twin bill July 6 in Tulsa - he pitched a combined seven shutout innings. The Portland, OR native posted one save and a 2.08 ERA in his first nine outings with the Missions, striking out eight against three walks in 13.0 innings. He has pitched twice against the Hooks this season, allowing two runs in 1.2 innings. Kunz began the year in Tucson's bullpen, going 2-0 with 6.59 ERA. He walked 15 and struck out nine in 28.2 innings while the Pacific League posted a .327 batting average. Kunz was 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA in 52 relief appearances for the Missions in 2011, issuing 34 free passes compared to 27 strikeouts. Originally drafted by New York as a supplemental selection (42nd overall) in 2007, he notched a 2.79 ERA and 27 saves in 44 appearances for Double-A Binghamton in 2008, earning Eastern League post-season all-star honors. Kunz would go on to pitch in four games for the Mets in August. In 2009, he spent the entire season at Triple-A Buffalo, going 4-5 with a 5.02 ERA over 40 appearances.

- 7-8 with a 5.34 ERA in 42 appearances (12 starts) for Binghamton in 2010

- Has posted an 18-23 record, 4.91 ERA, 194 walks, 212 strikeouts thru 6 minor-league seasons

- Went 10-2 with a 3.05 ERA over three years at Oregon State, notching 12 saves in 73 appearances

Clemens, acquired via trade from Atlanta, along with OF Jordan Schafer, RHP Juan Abreu and LHP Brett Oberholtzer, for Michael Bourn last July, makes his second start of the season for the Hooks. Clemens opened this home stand on Friday against the RockHounds, striking out seven while walking one over 6.2 innings. Three of the four runs he allowed came courtesy of two long balls. Clemens joined the club last week from Oklahoma City where he went 8-8 with a 6.73 ERA in 20 starts. He had allowed 16 home runs and 32 walks while striking out 68 in 101.2 innings for the RedHawks. A seventh-round pick of the Braves in 2008, Clemens began the year well, going 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA thru four April starts. He was 6-7 with an 8.02 ERA and an opponents' batting average of .367 over his last 16. Clemens has surrendered four earned runs or more in 12 of his 21 outings on the season. A member of Houston's 40-man roster, he was tabbed as the No. 5 prospect in the Astros system, according to Baseball America entering the season. Clemens went a combined 8-7 with a 3.81 ERA in 26 starts between Mississippi, Corpus Christi and Oklahoma City last season, striking out 125 against 62 walks in 144 innings. He held the opposition to a .239 batting average and did not allow an earned run over a span of 29.1 consecutive innings, covering portions of six starts from July 21 to August 21. Clemens represented the M-Braves as a Southern League All-Star before joining the Hooks in August.

Fernandez returns

Catcher Jay Fernandez rejoins the club today from Oklahoma City. Fernandez was promoted in mid-July but only played in two games for the RedHawks due to a hip-flexor injury. He was 1-for-8 with two RBIs. Fernandez opens play tonight with a seven-game hitting streak as a Hook. He's also hit safely in 16 of his last 20, batting .319 with five doubles, four home runs, 14 runs scored and 15 RBIs. Fernandez was named the Texas League's Player of the Week for June 11-17, notching a .524 batting average, three doubles, one home run and five RBIs. For the season, he's hitting .264 with a career-high five home runs and 19 RBIs in 39 games.

To make room on the roster, complete with six players on the disabled list (RHP Erick Abreu, C Rene Garcia, INF Andy Simunic, INF Jonathan Villar, OF Austin Wates and INF Brandon Wikoff), catcher Ryan McCurdy has been optioned to Lexington. McCurdy was hitting .200 with three doubles, one triple, a grand slam and nine RBIs in 29 games for the Hooks. He's logged 11 games for the Legends this season, batting .241 with three doubles and six RBIs.

Dog days of summer

With their 8-7 win over San Antonio last night, the Hooks improved to 20-10 in July and completed arguably the best month in team history. Corpus Christi went 18-7 in June of 2006.

The Hooks finished July half a game better than Springfield (19-10) and hit .277 for the month as a team to lead the Texas League. Further, it's only the second winning record Corpus Christi has posted in a July following its 16-12 mark in 2007 and the best July by any team in the league since Northwest Arkansas went 21-8 in 2008.

Castro slated for rehab with CC

Astros catcher and former Hook Jason Castro is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Corpus Christi on Friday in Midland, Houston manager Brad Mills announced this afternoon. Castro, hitting .254 with two home runs and 20 RBIs this season, has been on the disabled list since July 8 with right knee effusion. The Astros hope to have Castro, who missed all of last season following ACL surgery, catch three innings and work his way up to nine before being activated. A first-round selection (10th overall) in the 2008 draft out of Stanford, he hit .293 with three home runs and 29 RBIs in 63 games for the Hooks in 2009.

Power restored?

Jon Singleton hit the go-ahead home run last night in the bottom of the eighth inning; his first long ball since July 13 against Frisco. Despite raising his average from .274 to .284 by going 12-for 31 (.387) over his last nine games, Singleton has experienced a power outage over the last two weeks.

Since his last home run only six of his 21 hits have gone for extra bases (4 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR). He has now driven in seven runs in 18 games since July 13.

The majority of Singleton's power output came in an eight game stretch from May 24 to June 1 when he hit .394 (13-33) with six home runs and 14 runs batted in. His RBI last night was his first since July 23.
