Winston-Salem Dash News Release

LYNCHBURG, VA (JULY 13, 2011) - Ian Gac's 22nd home run of the season broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning, and the Winston-Salem bullpen withstood a late rally to give the Dash a 4-2 win over Lynchburg on Wednesday night at City Stadium. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Winston.

It was the Hillcats (6-13, 36-53) who struck first in the third inning against Dash starter Santos Rodriguez. Andrelton Simmons tripled to start the frame. After Phil Gosselin grounded out, Adam Milligan singled home Simmons to put the Cats up 1-0.

Winston (9-10, 41-48) didn't waste time tying the score. In the fourth, Gac reached on an infield single and advanced to second when Mike Blanke singled to left. Nick Ciolli then sacrificed the runners into scoring position before Kyle Colligan was intentionally walked. Austin Yount, who had been hitting .086 (3-for-35) against lefties, hit a deep sac fly to right-center that scored Gac.

The game remained tied into the seventh inning. Rodriguez threw a career-high four innings and allowed only one run on five hits before Stephen Sauer took over. Sauer threw two scoreless innings and struck out two heading into the top of the seventh.

The Dash were able to take advantage with two outs in the seventh. Hillcats reliever Jeremy Haynes walked Jared Mitchell and Andy Wilkins, before Gac unleashed a towering drive that left the ballpark and put Winston-Salem up 4-1. The three RBIs for Gac moved him into the lead in the Carolina League with 61.

Reliever Garrett Johnson made his first appearance with the Dash in 2011 and worked a harmless seventh, but ran into trouble in the eighth. Gosselin walked to lead off the inning, and came around to score on Joey Terdoslavich's double. Christian Bethancourt singled and moved to second on Colligan's throw home. With runners at second and third, Johnson was pulled for Ryan Kussmaul. Joe Leonard struck out for the second out, and Kussmaul induced a popup from Geraldo Rodriguez that ended the threat.

Kussmaul stayed in to pitch the ninth and struck out the side to earn his third save of the season in as many chances. Sauer (1-0) picked up the win in his two scoreless, hitless innings. Haynes (1-1) was hit with the loss after he allowed three runs (all earned) on two hits in two innings and walked four.

Winston-Salem and Lynchburg continue their three-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at City Stadium. Carolina League Pitcher of the Week, LHP Matt Wickswat (1-1, 2.73), throws for the Dash against RHP David Hale (1-3, 4.60)
