G-Braves fall back into tie for first, lose 8-5

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves lost to the Durham Bulls 8-5 on Friday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. Starter Yohan Flande gave up 6 ER on his way to his third loss of the year. With the loss, the G-Braves (36-31) are now back into a tie with the Bulls (36-31) for first place in the International League South.

It Was Over When: In the top of the first inning, RF Brandon Guyer hit a 2-run double to LF, scoring CF Desmond Jennings and SS Ray Olmedo. The Bulls ended up with a 3-0 lead after the inning, and would hold onto it for the rest of the game.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: LHP Flande (2-3) took the hill for the G-Braves on the rain threatened evening. Flande, who was tagged for the loss, tossed 4.1 IP with 9 H, 6 R/ER, 2 BB, 2 K's and a HR allowed. RHP Anthony Varvaro came in for Flande in the fifth inning, tossing 1.2 IP allowing a hit and striking out 3. RHP Jaye Chapman was next in line and tossed 1.0 IP allowing 2 H, 2 R/ER, a BB and struck out one. RHP Juan Abreu came in the 8th inning for the Braves and threw a perfect inning with 2 K's, lowering his ERA to 2.76. RHP Cory Gearrin came in the 9th for the Braves and threw a perfect inning with 2 K's.

At the plate: 1B Ed Lucas put the G-Braves on the board in the 3rd inning with a monster solo shot over the left field retaining wall. Lucas finished the night going 1-for-4 with a R, RBI and a HR. LF Nate McLouth, who joined the G-Braves on an MLB rehab stint yesterday, went 1-for-3 with a R and a BB. In the bottom of the 6th inning, with the bases loaded, SS Julio Lugo hit a bases clearing double to the center field wall. Overall on the night, Lugo went 1-for-3 with a 2B, 3 RBI and a BB.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Dirk Hayhurst (3-1) was dominant until the 6th inning, when he loaded the bases with Braves and gave up a 3-run 2B to Lugo. He still finished the day throwing 5.1 IP with 6 H, 4 R/ER, 3 BB, 3 K's and allowed a solo shot to Lucas. RHP Mike Ekstrom relieved Hayhurst in the 6th and finished the inning, striking out both batters that he faced. RHP Brandon Gomes followed Ekstrom and tossed 1.2 IP with 2 BB and a K. LHP Jake McGee relieved Gomes and finished the game threw 1.1 IP with 2 H, 1 R/ER, a BB and 2 K's.

At the Plate: The Bulls tagged on 3-runs in the top of the first inning to start the game off. Guyer led the offense for the Bulls with a 3-for-5 performance with 3 R, 4 RBI, a 2B and a HR. C Robinson Chirinos went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.

On Deck: The G-Braves take on the Bulls in the third of four games on this first series in the current eight game homestand, with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night at Coolray Field. Gwinnett will throw RHP Erik Cordier (1-2, 2.86) vs. LHP Alex Torres (2-5, 4.24) for Durham. The game can be heard on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM and seen on TV on CSS. Etc: Tomorrow night, Saturday, June 18th, the G-Braves will be giving away a Coolray Field Stadium Replica sponsored by Coolray Heating and Cooling to the first 2,500 fans. In addition to the giveaway, the Gwinnett Braves will be hosting their first ever Juneteenth Celebration as part of their signature Heritage Nights taking place this summer. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally-celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. There will be performance, spoken word poetry, appearances by former Atlanta Brave Otis Nixon, as well as Carl Long and other former Negro League Players.
