Furious First Period Enough for Saints Win

December 17, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

KEARNEY, Neb. - Chayse Primeau started the scoring party just 36 seconds into the game for the Dubuque Fighting Saints, and it continued for two more strikes. Those three goals in the first period were enough to stave off the Tri-City Storm's third period rally as the Saints topped the Storm 4-2 on Friday night at the Viaero Center.

Primeau was the recipient of a Hugo Blixt turnover in front of the net, and on the first shot of the game, he connected for his sixth goal of the season, as he beat Jake Barczewski, who was starting for just the third time this season.

It took seven minutes for the Saints to keep the pressure up and keep the scoring rolling. Quinn Preston took a Jordan Wishman feed down the left wing, beat a defender clean and snapped a shot past Barczewski to extend the Saints' lead to 2-0.

Rookie Jake Hale capped the first-period scoring a minute and 45 seconds later on the rebound of a Logan Pietila shot. It was his second of the season.

Jaxon Castor contributed 18 saves to the win. A potential goal by Brian Yoon in the first period was waved off, and Tyler Ward, as well as Blixt, both tallied for the Storm within a minute to claw within one. But it was Castor and the defense that held strong in the win.

Preston added the insurance tally with just under two minutes to play in the third, following Tri-City's quick rally. Josh Maniscalco's shot bounded in front of the net, where Primeau fed Preston on the back post for his second goal of the game, and ninth of the season.

After a shaky start by Barczewski, the first-year netminder settled in and kept the Saints at bay, particularly frustrating Scott Corbett on his many scoring opportunities on the night.

The Saints finish off the weekend to wrap up the back-to-back with the Storm at the Viaero Center on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. Catch all of the action on Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM, or on the USHL's streaming video provider, HockeyTV.
