Full Day of Home Runs, but Dragons fall short 6-3

Dayton, OH – After averaging ten runs a game for a six game stretch, the Dayton Dragons (2-2, 28-45) and the Lansing Lugnuts (2-2, 40-34) played back-to-back close games, including Sunday afternoon’s series finale which the Lugnuts won 6-3. Lansing starter Carlos Marmol (8-1) picked up the win while Alexander Farfan (0-7) was tagged with the loss in front of 8,609 at Fifth Third Field.

Dayton starter Omar Segovia (ND, 1-0) was brilliant early, striking out the first five Lugnuts he faced before a troublesome third inning, the frame that Lansing did most of their damage. He had a lead to work with going into that third inning as Ben Himes hit a 2-run homer off of Marmol onto First Street over the right field fence scoring Walter Olmstead, who was hit by a pitch in the previous at-bat. Jeremiah Piepkorn also homered in the inning off of the Lansing starter, his first as a professional giving the Dragons a 3-0 lead through two innings.

In the Lansing half of the third, Lugnuts DH Adam Tidball made his Midwest League debut by singling to left-field before Segovia walked the speedy Chris Walker. With two men aboard, the Dayton lefty hung a pitch to left-fielder Ryan FitzgeraldÂ’s liking, as he hit it a three-run monster home run over the Dragons Lair in left field to tie the game at three a piece.

Dragons manager Alonso Powell brought on Alexander Farfan (L, 0-7) to relieve Segovia who finished his afternoon with eight strikeouts while allowing all three runs off the round-tripper. Unfortunately for the Miami ValleyÂ’s team, Farfan did not fair much better against Lansing batters; two quick ground outs to Chris Walker and Ryan Fitzgerald brought up Lugnuts slugger Brian Dopirak. The leagueÂ’s home run leader, who had been quiet in the previous three games hit a Farfan delivery off the batters eye in center field to give the 4-3 advantage to the visitors. DopirakÂ’s Midwest League leading 21st home run proved to be the difference in the ball game.

After the go ahead run was plated, the Lansing bullpen took over. Marmol finished the day with five innings pitched, surrendering six hits and three runs while striking out eight Dayton Dragons. Once Marmol exited, the likes of RHP Reed Willett (ND, 0-3) and Juan Mateo (S, 2) shut the door, allowing just one hit in four innings of relief.

In the Lansing eighth inning, they were able to plate two big insurance runs off of RHP Jon George (ND, 0-0) to finalize the scoring at prevent another Dragons comeback. A 6-3 score was enough to seal the victory as the Lugnuts even the series and their second half record at 2-2.

With a 2-2 record of their own, the Dragons will embark on a six day, six game road trip beginning with a four game series against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Monday night. 1410 ESPN Radio will have live coverage of all six games beginning with the pregame show on Monday night at 7:35 PM, with the first pitch at 8:05 PM ET. The Dragons will send RHP Justin Gillman (0-1) to the hill; Wisconsin will counter with LHP Thomas Oldham.
