Fuenmayor, Lugs rally to best skidding Loons

May 11, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING, Mich. - Balbino Fuenmayor's bases-clearing triple highlighted a five-run eighth inning that led the Lansing Lugnuts (11-21) to an 8-5 comeback win over the Great Lakes Loons (12-22) at Cooley Law School Stadium on Saturday night.

Entering the bottom of the eighth trailing 4-3, the Lugnuts took advantage of a wild Great Lakes bullpen.

After a pair of walks by Luis Meza (Loss, 1-1) chased him from the game, a single by Kevin Patterson off Loons reliever Jake Hermsen loaded the bases for Lansing. Kellen Sweeney then worked a walk to tie the game at 4-4.

Loons skipper Razor Shines went to the bullpen once more, calling on right-hander Sawil Gonzalez, who allowed a triple to right-center past the shallow outfield by Fuenmayor, giving Lansing a 7-4 lead.

Seth Conner's sacrifice fly scored Fuenmayor to improve the lead to 8-4 and extend the Loons' losing-streak to nine straight ballgames.

Walks by Chuck Ghysels (Win, 1-1) and Wil Browning helped load the bases in the ninth for the Loons, bringing them to within 8-5, but Browning sealed the win with a pair of strikeouts, earning his first save of the season.

Lansing starter Taylor Cole lasted five innings for the Lugs in the no-decision, allowing four runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Lansing trailed 4-3 upon his exit.

On the other side, Great Lakes starter Angel Sanchez kept the Lugnuts bats quiet in six innings of work. He allowed three runs, but none of them were earned, due to a pair of errors by shortstop Jesmuel Valentin. Sanchez struck out eight Lugnuts batters and walked two.

Lugs second baseman Christian Lopes extended his hitting streak to seven straight games with an RBI single in the third that put the Lugs up 2-0 early. Meanwhile, an 0-for-3 performance from Shane Opitz snapped his hitting streak at nine games.

The middle game of the series is set for a 2:05 p.m. first pitch on a Sunday Kid's Day. Lansing will send right-hander Ben White (0-2, 5.30) against Great Lakes right-hander Jonathan Martinez (0-2, 5.12).

Lansing Lugnuts tickets are available for purchase at lansinglugnuts.com and by calling 517-485-4500, and Lugnuts text alerts are easily accessed by texting LUGNUTS to 313131.
