Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI - Coming into Saturday's contest, the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings had won five consecutive contests against the Port Huron Fighting Falcons. On Saturday, Port Huron broke their losing streak, as they were able to defeat the rival Kalamazoo squad by the score of 4-3.
Port Huron started the scoring on Saturday afternoon when Brett D'Andrea (12th) fired one from the slot that quickly got into the back of the net. D'Andrea was set up by the pass from Payden Mielke from the behind the Kalamazoo goal.
The Jr. K-Wings would be able to respond, though, at the 17:38 mark. Mike Fazio (6th) found the top right corner of the net when he collected the rebound of a blocked shot in the center of the circle. His goal tied the game at one as both teams went to the locker rooms for the first intermission.
The game would remain tied for the majority of the second period, but after a penalty ridden final minutes, Port Huron found themselves with a 4 on 3 opportunity. They were able to take advantage with just 10 seconds remaining when Mick Bruce recorded his second goal of the year, and gave Port Huron the one goal lead after forty minutes of play.
Period number three got off to an exciting start as the Falcons had an early power play chance. Easton Powers (7th) was able to maneuver around Jr. K-Wing goalie Alex Okicki and extend the Falcon lead to 3-1.
Kalamazoo would quickly respond with a goal of their own. A little more than a minute after Port Huron extended their lead to two goals, Kalamazoo cut it back down to one when Mac McDonnell recorded his third goal of the season.
After being separated by only a goal for most of the final period, the Jr. K-Wings were forced to pull Okicki in the final minutes. This resulted in an empty net goal from Rick DeRosa (11th) and a two goal lead for the Falcons in the final minute.
Kalamazoo continued to play without a net minder, and it allowed them to cut the score the 3-1 when Brett Beauvais (7th) scored with just15 seconds showing on the clock. Unfortunately for Kalamazoo, they were not able to complete the comeback, and Port Huron recorded the 4-3 victory.
The Jr. K-Wings are back home next Saturday where they will face off against the Jamestown Ironmen at 2 pm.
