Fresno Fuego Advance in U.S. Open Cup with 4-1 Win

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Fuego (USL Premier Development League) were back on the pitch at Chukchansi Park Wednesday, hosting La Maquina FC of the United Premier Soccer League in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup action. Fresno's 4-1 victory advances them to the play the professional Phoenix Rising of the United Soccer League on Wednesday, May 17 at the Fresno State Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m. (Chukchansi Park will be occupied by Fresno Grizzlies baseball on that day).

Tickets for the match at Fresno State will go on sale this Friday (May 12) at Noon at the Chukchansi Park box office and at FresnoFuego.com. Only 1,500 tickets will be available, due to size constraints of the college facility.

Against La Maquina FC, Fuego midfielder Jose Cuevas opened the scoring facing goal inside the box in the 19thminute, the lone tally of the first half.

Goalkeeper Augustin Rey, who would earn El Mexicano Man of the Match honors, made two diving saves within the first eight minutes to ensure Fresno would lead at the break. Rey also opened the second half with a pair of acrobatic stops, in the 52nd and 56th minute to keep the Fuego in front.

The next goal would not come until the 65 minute mark, when La Maquina's Jose Montes De Oca, a reserve, evened the score 1-1 thanks to an assist from Edwin Borboa. Fresno re-took the lead in the 70th minute however when Cuevas scored his second, off a turnover in close for a 2-1 advantage. The Fuego poured it on from there, scoring again in the 74th minute (Joey Chica off the bench, assisted by forward Etiandro Tavares) and again in stoppage time (Tavares) to cruise to the 4-1 decision.

Fresno returns to PDL action on Sunday, May 14 at Burlingame. Their next PDL game at home will be Friday, May 26 against the Ventura County Fusion; kickoff time at Chukchansi Park is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The match will be preceded by Fresno Freeze women's soccer. The Fuego are 1-0-0 in league following a season-opening 4-0 win over Burlingame on May 6 at home.

The Fuego begin the 2017 season on the heels off a Central Pacific Division title and a 10-3-1 record. 2017 single-game tickets are now on sale, by visiting FresnoFuego.com or the ticket office at Chukchansi Park.
