Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

ST. PAUL, MN- The St. Paul Saints tagged out the game-tying runner at the plate to end a Gary SouthShore RailCats 9th inning comeback and allow the Saints to escape with a 6-5 victory. The RailCats (0-2) outhit the Saints (2-0) 11 to five, but couldn't string hits together until the final inning, leading to their second consecutive loss.

The RailCats managed two hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch in the 9th before Tillman Pugh hit a double off the wall. Cameron Newell ran through the stop sign from third-base coach Mike Goss in an attempt to tie the game, but was tagged out by Saints catcher Tony Caldwell.

The RailCats dug themselves a hole with a sloppy first inning featuring four walks, an error, and a wild pitch. Eric Eadington made his American Association debut as the starter for the Cats and faltered from the get go, allowing five runs in the first inning, although just one was earned. Saints starter Robert Coe scattered five hits over 5.2 innings to get the win for St. Paul.

There were multiple instances where it felt like Gary SouthShore would break through and cut into the lead, but the big hit never materialized. Cameron Newell barely missed a home run on a 2nd inning single and the Cats loaded the bases in the 6th, but didn't net runs in either scenario.

The RailCats got on the board first with Masato Fukae scoring off a Jose Sermo RBI single. The disastrous five-run bottom of the first came next, but then fans had to wait until the 6th for more scoring.

Jose Gonzalez led off the inning with a double and advanced to third base after a Jarred Mederos ground out. Newell knocked in Gonzalez with an RBI single in the next at bat. A Pugh single and a Brennan Metzger walk loaded the bases, but Jeremy Hamilton struck out stranding the three runners. Caldwell answered the RailCats run with a solo shot off reliever John Kovalik.

The 9th started quietly for the RailCats with a pair of strikeouts. The rally began with another Gonzalez double and continued with an Elbert Devarie single that scored pinch runner Matt Hibbert drawing the score to 6-3. Next, pinch hitter Marquis Riley walked and Newell was hit by a pitch, bringing up Pugh. Pugh connected with a ball sending it off the wall and scoring Devarie and Riley. Newell then tried to tie the game but was ruled out in an easy play for Caldwell.

There were bright spots for the Cats, however, including Gonzalez's 4-5 day and the strong performances by Kevin Osaki, Kovalik, and Andy Roberts out of the bullpen.

The RailCats and Saints battle again on Saturday, May 21st at 7:05 for game three of the four game series. You can catch the action starting with the Mansard's Pre-Game Show at 6:40 on 95.9 WEFM and online at railcatsbaseball.com.
