Franco, Bullpen Sparkle in 1-0 Win

Montgomery Biscuits News Release

JACKSON, Ten. - The Biscuits (6-5) achieved what was perhaps their most impressive victory of the season thus far, blanking the Jackson Generals (8-3), 1-0, on Monday night at The Ballpark at Jackson.

Mike Franco (1-0) got the start for the Biscuits and turned what was just his sixth start in pro ball into a memorable one going 5.2 shutout innings for his first Double-A win against the reigning Southern League Champions. Franco was eventually relieved by Kyle Bird who went 1.1 scoreless innings before handing the reigns over to Diego Castillo who pitched a scoreless eighth.

The Biscuits lone run would come in the fifth inning when second baseman Riley Unroe, who also made a couple of spectacular defensive plays in the field, dragged an RBI-bunt single up the first baseline to score Joe McCarthy from third, and Montgomery never looked back. Unroe extended his hitting streak to eight games with the hit, and his teammate Nick Ciuffo would extend his to ten with a leadoff double in the ninth.

Kyle Winkler would enter the game in the bottom of the ninth, and after retiring the first two batters walked Kevin Medrano. Victor Reyes then came on to pinch run for the shortstop, but was thrown out trying to steal second on a laser beam unleashed by Biscuits catcher Justin O'Conner to end the game.

The Biscuits now trail the Generals by two games in the First Half North Division, and will try to shrink that number to one on Tuesday night when Hunter Wood (1-1) takes on Josh Taylor (1-1) at 6:05 PM.
