Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts saw an early lead dissipate thanks to a four-run sixth that saw the Joplin Blasters take a lead they did not relinquish in a 10-6 win at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium Friday night.

With the Wingnuts (39-21) leading 5-2, Joplin (19-40) put together a four-run sixth that changed the outlook of the contest. An RBI single by Mark Krueger, the third of his five hits on the evening, and an RBI bounce out by Mitch Glasser pulled the Blasters within one. Geraldo Valentin then launched a two-run shot off of Jon Link (7-4) to give the visitors the lead.

Once they grabbed the lead, the Joplin bullpen went into shutdown mode, as they retired 10 Wingnuts in a row at one point, while also tacking on one run in the eighth and three in the ninth against the Wichita relief corps to push their lead to 10-5.

Wichita got one back in the ninth on a Brent Clevlen sacrifice fly that brought home Christian Stringer, but that was all the Wingnuts offense could muster on the scoreboard after the fourth.

The evening started well for Wichita, as T.J. Mittelstaedt launched a three-run opposite field shot to make it 3-0 four batters into the game.

The Wingnuts added another in the fourth on a Zack Cox RBI single, his 12th RBI over his last six games.

Joplin got their first two in the third, but Wichita stretched their lead back to three at 5-2 on an RBI single by Stringer in the fourth.

The Wingnuts and Blasters continue their three-game series Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Wichita will turn to southpaw Todd Kibby (1-0, 3.27), while Joplin will counter with right-hander Victor Ramirez (1-0, 0.00). First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
