Four-Run Sixth Highlights Potomac Victory

August 1, 2017 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

Woodbridge, VA-With four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Potomac Nationals (48-58, 15-21) picked up a 5-2 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats (62-45, 22-16) on Monday night. Behind six innings of one-run baseball from RHP Austen Williams (W, 2-3), the P-Nats picked up their seventh win in the past nine games.

The teams traded zeroes through the first five innings, as Williams and LHP Tanner Tully (L, 0-1) dominated through the first half of the game. Williams buckled first, as the Hillcats earned their only lead of the night with a run in the top of the sixth inning. 3B Gavin Collins tallied a one-out double, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI groundout from LF Jodd Carter. That was the only run that Williams allowed, as he struck out eight and allowed just four hits.

Potomac rattled Tully in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the first four batters reached base, and all eventually scored. DH Jack Sundberg led off the inning with a single, and scored on an RBI double by CF Daniel Johnson. 3B Ian Sagdal followed with an RBI double of his own, and he later scored on a wild pitch, which made it 3-0 Potomac. Tully hit LF Dale Carey with a pitch, his final offering of the night. After RHP Paul Hendrix entered from the bullpen and retired C Jakson Reetz, SS Edwin Lora made it 4-0 with an RBI single.

Both sides scored a run in the seventh, as LHP R.C. Orlan (SV, 4) gave up an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning. A wild pitch plated SS Ivan Castillo with two outs, and the run scored following an error by Sagdal, the only error in the game for either team. In the home half of the frame, 2B Bryan Mejia doubled with one out off of RHP Argenis Angulo, reached third base on a bunt single by Sundberg, and scored on a two-out RBI single by Sagdal, which closed the scoring at 5-2.

Orlan allowed just one hit and struck out four over three innings. Three different Potomac hitters tallied two hits, while six different P-Nats recorded at least one hit. On rehab from the Washington Nationals, DH Michael Taylor went 0-2 with a fly out to right field and a strikeout.

Looking for a season best eighth win in 10 games, the P-Nats will turn to LHP Taylor Guilbeau (2-2, 4.35) on Tuesday night. Guilbeau has allowed at least four earned runs in three of his last four starts, and is winless in his last six outings. For the Hillcats, RHP Aaron Civale (5-2, 3.02) will make his third start of the season for Potomac. The righty made his Carolina League debut against the P-Nats on 6/1 in a victory, and tallied a no-decision on 7/20 at Pfitzner Stadium.

First pitch is set for 7:05pm. The Potomac broadcast will get underway at 6:50pm with the P-Nats Leadoff Show. You can listen to the Potomac broadcast at potomacnationals.com or on the TuneIn Radio App.
