Four-Run Ninth Completes Marathon Comeback

Lancaster, CA. - With four runs in the ninth, the Modesto Nuts completed their largest comeback of the year to defeat the Lancaster JetHawks 15-13 on Tuesday night at The Hangar. Gianfranc Wawoe knocked JetHawks (14-18) reliever Salvador Justo (L, 2-4) out of the contest with a game-tying two-run single in the top of the ninth. Eric Filia followed with the go-ahead two-run single into center to give the Nuts the lead for good and complete the second comeback of the night. Wawoe finished 3-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored. Filia reached in five-of-six plate appearances with four hits. Spencer Herrmann (S, 1/1) worked around a single in the bottom of the ninth to finish off the Nuts' (20-12) triumph which took four hours and four minutes. The Nuts become the first California League team with 20 wins and are now a season-high eight games over .500. A pair of homers from Sam Hilliard helped the JetHawks open a six-run lead against the Nuts and starter Anthony Misiewicz through the first four innings. The Nuts' lefty worked five innings allowing nine hits and three homers leading to six runs with three walks and four strikeouts. In the fifth and sixth, the Nuts plated nine unanswered runs to take a three-run lead. After the JetHawks tied it in the sixth, Ricky Eusebio gave the Nuts a brief lead with a solo home run into center. Eusebio went 3-for-4, with two RBI and three runs scored. Brendon Rodgers put the JetHawks back on top in the bottom of the seventh with a grand slam before the Nuts' ninth-inning heroics. Matt Walker (W, 2-0) surrendered the grand slam, but worked a scoreless eighth to help the Nuts stay within striking distance.
