Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kan. - Five hits and two errors led to four first inning runs for the Wichita Wingnuts, as they cruised past the Cleburne Railroaders 6-3 on Friday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Wichita (36-23) didn't waste time grabbing the lead against Cleburne starter Patrick Mincey (0-7). The Wingnuts scored first when Zach Nehrir laid down a bunt single that Mincey threw away, allowing Logan Watkins to score. Nehrir scored on another Cleburne error as part of a double steal when Jake Simpson's throw to second was errant, making it 2-0 Wichita. Tony Thomas singled home a run and Ryne Willard capped the inning with a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.
That would prove to be enough support for Wingnuts starter Tyler Kane (4-1), who danced around trouble to cover five innings while allowing six hits and two runs. The right-hander struck out five and walked a season-high five batters.
Cleburne (20-37) got to Kane in the third, scoring a pair of runs after two were out. Levi Scott and Patrick Palmeiro both recorded RBI singles in the frame to pull the Railroaders within 4-2.
The Wingnuts restored their four-run cushion with a pair of runs in the fifth against Mincey. Nehrir led off the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI single from Nieves. John Nester added the second tally of the inning with another run-scoring single to score Nieves for a 6-2 advantage.
A two-out RBI triple from Angel Rosa scored Cleburne's last run of the game in the eighth. Austin Boyle recorded his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth, striking out two Cleburne hitters in the process.
The Wingnuts continue their series with the Railroaders on Saturday night. Travis Banwart (4-2, 2.53) will get the ball for Wichita, to be opposed by fellow righty Dylan Mouzakes (1-5, 4.86) First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM, and will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
