Clinton LumberKings News Release

CLINTON, IA- The Clinton LumberKings worked a season-high 10 walks but could not overcome a four-run fifth inning in a 5-3 loss to the Peoria Chiefs on Sunday afternoon at Ashford University Field. The LumberKings (22-32) took an early 3-0 lead but could not hold on against the Chiefs (24-32) fifth inning rally.

Luis Rengifo staked the LumberKings to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Chiefs starter John Kilichowski on his third pitch of the game served up a solo homme run to Rengifo that hit off the facing of the Coors Light Pavilion in left field for his third homer run of the season. The home run was the fourth by a LumberKing this season to leadoff a game and was estimated to have traveled 388 feet.

The lead was stretched to three in the bottom of the second inning. Gareth Morgan and Johmbeyker Morales each drew one-out walks to put two men on in the inning, and following a Kilichowski wild pitch, Luis Liberato brought home the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center. Rengifo then capped the rally with an RBI double to left to score Morales.

The LumberKings then failed to score over the next seven innings. Ronnie Williams (2-3), Max Almonte, and Yeason Medina combined to hold Clinton scoreless for the remainder of the game with Williams earning the win with 2.2 innings of work.

Ronald Dominguez made his third start for Clinton and was sharp through his first three innings of work. In the top of the third, Dominguez (0-3) ran into trouble allowing back-to-back singles to Andrew Young and Andrew Knizner. Two batter later Vince Jackson worked a walk to load the bases. Dominguez then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Young to score from third.

Young paced the offense for Peoria and was responsible for three of the Chiefs 10 hits. He went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.

The game was decided in the top of the fifth inning when Peoria erupted for four runs. Dominguez started the inning, but failed to record an out in the fifth. The first five men reached in the inning for Peoria against Dominguez. Shane Billings and Young capped the rally with RBI singles for the Chiefs, Young's single forcing Dominguez from the game.

The LumberKings drew a season-high 10 walks but could not break through for any runs against the Chiefs bullpen. Despite loading the bases in the third and eighth innings the LumberKings were held scoreless over the final seven frames. Medina then set down the LumberKings 1-2-3 in the ninth to preserve the Chiefs win and earn his third save of the season.

The LumberKings will take tomorrow off before opening a three-game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Left-handed pitcher Nick Wells (1-5, 6.70) will take the ball for Clinton and face Cedar Rapid's right-handed pitcher Tyler Wells (2-0, 2.37). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM (CDT) with the pregame show beginning at 6:15 PM (CDT) on 100.3 FM WCCI Erik Oas is on the call. Tuesdays are sweet and salty Tuesdays at Ashford University Field with 50 cent popcorn and cotton candy all game long.
